latin pronunciation question

Recommended Posts

We do PL and in it I believe she says SALVE is Saul-vay and discipuli is di-sip-u-lee. DS takes latin in PS says that there is no 'v' sound in latin and it is saul-way and di-skip-u-lee. Am I nuts or is he studying a different form of latin?

In theory, if you're adhering to reconstructed (so-called "classical") pronunciation, V should be read as W. Personally I dislike it (and adhere, mostly, to "Italian" pronunciation of Latin, thus making it V), but yes, it should be W. Many Europeans who learn reconstructed pronunciation pronounce it as V, though.

In any case, A is not an "au" sound in Saul - it's a clear vowel, like in modern Italian.
