Is there such a thing as a "better" yo yo?

DS13 has decided he wants a yo yo after watching a friend do some tricks. Pretty simple request but...other than remembering that I could always make a butterfly yo yo work but never the regular kind...is there anything I need to know when choosing his yo yo?

I think Duncan is still one of the top, affordable brands out there. I know nothing about them...I just remember hubs playing around with them for a while. All I have to offer is...get the Butterfly as a minimum and you should be ok.

 

I'd say do a search for a yo-yo forum or something, but, as with anything else, everyone has their favorite and you'd likely just end up more confused.

 

Maybe get him a Butterfly and one notch above, let him determine if there's a difference. And with the Butterfly he should be able to get a good feel for the gig and decide if he wants to put more time/money into the hobby. kwim?

Duncan is kind of the bottom of the good yoyo's, the affordable one. You can get much better ones but they cost more. Maybe this will help?

:bigear: My 9 year old daughter has asked for a "good" yo-yo, too. She got a chintzy one from the dentist and started doing tricks with it after watching youtube videos. Until it broke.
