ChrisB
I'd like to get DD6 a basic, knit or crochet, how-to book/video and supplies. I don't know how to knit and the very basics for crocheting. Do you have any recommendations for a book or video? Where do we start with supplies? And, any other advice is welcome! Thanks!

mom2jjka
There are many good crochet tutorials on Youtube as far as a book I really love this one http://www.amazon.com/Crochet-Answer-Book-Solutions-Question/dp/1580175988/ref=pd_sim_b_21
Mothersweets
My dds and I learned to knit using this really fantastic dvd for beginners! Our internet connection was/is less than stellar so the dvd was great for us. Knitting has been a wonderful, very useful hobby for us! the knitting help site is great, too! Another really good place to look for easy patterns is http://www.ravelry.com/ You do have to join, but it is free and oh, so worth it! ChrisB
Thanks so far! I've already started to peruse the websites. Any advice on needles and yarn?
Blueridge
The year my dd used Oak Meadow, they suggested wooden knitting needles and wool yarn because they were natural and comforting to touch. :)

For a 6yo I would highly recommend the Knifty Knitter. I know 6yo's can knit or crochet the conventional way perfectly well, but my kids all still absolutely love their Knifty Knitters and can create hats & scarves quickly and without frustration or help from me. ;) There are tons of free tutorials on YouTube if anything in the directions looks confusing. Tarreymere
If you have a Joann's fabric store nearby they have knitting and crochet kits that come with beginner's instructions, the needles or hooks, and some even have yarn for the first project. or on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Taught-Myself-Crochet-Beginners-Kit/dp/B000WV84ZA/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1291348705&sr=8-11 http://www.amazon.com/Alex-Chunky-Funky-Beginners-Knitting/dp/B000BWYN78/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1291348705&sr=8-5 http://www.amazon.com/Taught-Myself-Knitting-Beginners-Kit/dp/B000WV867Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1291348705&sr=8-3 http://www.amazon.com/Knit-Tadpole-Knitting-Board-Scarf/dp/B002YIS65W/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1291348889&sr=8-
LittleIzumi
I used knittinghelp.com and Youtube, and I second the wooden needles. They have grip so the yarn doesn't fall off all the time. The needle size depends on what she plans to knit.
mytwomonkeys
everything i know, i learned on youtube. seriously. i crochet, knit, and have the looms. my daughter started with finger knitting, then looms, then crocheting, and knitting will be last. that's just what was easiest for her (probably because knitting is my weakest link, lol). ChrisB
So it looks like wooden needles for knitting to begin with. How about yarn? Ideally I'd like something washable and a decent brand. I need all about yarn 101 :bigear:.
