Annie N
I have the chance to go to a used homeschool bookstore, and I have a couple of boxes of books which are in varying conditions, from never-used to somewhat beat-up but not written in to... 2 or 3 pages answered in pencil (Sigh). How much better would it be for me to sell these items myself over selling them to the used homeschooling bookstore? I mean, very generally if someone has done one or the other. I have bought from them before, and they seem to charge about 2/3s of the price even for very beat-up (but not written in) books, I think she buys for about 1/2 of what she thinks she'll be able to get for them; so I figure I'll be able to get about 1/3 of the original price for some of the stuff. I guess what I really need to know is, how much do people generally get for the books they sell used online? Because I have hardly ever bought used online. I was thinking that maybe this might work out best: I keep books which look new and sell myself online, and take the rest up to her, but then I thought that maybe with shipping, it might not be worth it--i'd make out about the same? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Shipping is not that much for books and educational items because you can ship at media mail rates. For books, you can check places like Amazon to see what they're selling for in used condition (use the ISBN to look them up). Anything that would sell for $5 or more is worth selling yourself online, whether through Amazon or here or somewhere else. Everything else I'd pack up and take to the store. Annie N
Oh, wow! I had no idea... (I'm a bit of a pack rat...) Then I'll keep quite a bit of it and try and sell it online and only take some stuff with me. Thank you very much :)
Sharon in SC
It's worth it to sell the better quality items online. I agree. I charge 75% of what places like Rainbow Resource want for my "mint condition" materials (ppd - postage paid) without trouble.
Annie N
75% of like new, ppd? Sounds great! Thanks, Sharon.

Mandamom
and then took what didn't sell to the local consignment shop (not so local any more, though). That way I got the chance to control what I hoped/needed to get and then I wasn't stuck with shelves of books that sat around because no one was interested. Alphabetika
because I like to think I'm helping homeschoolers get good books, and I enjoy "meeting" people I've sold books to. My girls have gotten pen pals this way, too! I usually charge about 50-75% of what a book would be new, including shipping. For me, it's more about the relationship and sharing books with people than it is the money. My older dd and I have often dreamed about having a used bookstore IRL that would especially cater to HSers, so this is sort of my way of doing that in the way that I can right now. momto3
I agree that you will get more for your books that you sell yourself. You can also sell things that the bookstore probably will not take. Of course, it is important to disclose the exact condition of the books but, personally, I would not mind if a workbook had a few pages completed. Our homeschool store will not take anything that is not in very good condition. They charge about 50% of retail, so they pay 25% to the seller. What about participating in a curriculum sale with your local homeschool group? This is the perfect time of year.
