We just witnessed toads laying eggs!

Recommended Posts

So cool! We have a small garden pond and the frogs and toads have been increasing in numbers each day. The kids happen to attend a nature talk about frogs/toads last week so knew all about the mating process and had been asking when the frogs would lay eggs.

Today the kids came in yelling "the frogs got married!" :001_rolleyes:

Yep, there were 3 prs of toads piled up out there! ;)

We have mostly toads but there is a bullfrog in there too that they really want to see get "married" since it's huge.

So we started watching them and the next thing ya know, there was a long string of eggs coming out of the female-it was 2 feet long!

The toads would swim around and the strings would go all over-like garland on a Christmas tree....really neat to watch. Or gross I guess to some ;)

Anyway, it was really fun to watch and learn. We took lots of pics so we can make some type booklet or lapbook.

Now to wait for the tadpoles :)

A year or two ago we happened onto a pond where this was going on. Except it was a big pond and there were dozens of frogs/toads (I don't know which) "at play". The kids were picking them up and moving them around and I felt so bad for the poor critters, but at the same time wanted to encourage the kids' interest in nature, LOL. I was alternately yelling, "Stop it! Oh, look at that. Stop it! Oh, look at that!" There were probably some extremely frustrated frogs by the time we left.
