twoxcell
Alright so my mom always asks me to tell her what to buy the kids for Christmas. I have given her ideas for all my kids except the youngest. He just turned 1 year old. Any recommendations for an educational toy that can keep a one year old boy occupied during school? It needs to be 30 dollars or less(my mom has 14 grandkids). TIA
Paige
My mother gave my youngest this puzzle set and she loved it! She would spend a long time playing with them and putting them together and doing all sorts of stuff with them. She was about 16months old, so a little older than 1 but she was not too young for this at all. She needed help at first but if you have older kids it is something they can easily do to play with him. She didn't need any help after a few weeks- sometimes she wanted help, but she was still happy to play with them independently.
stripe
How about a set of wooden blocks?
twoxcell
We have wooden blocks, lacing toys, some puzzles, wedgits, tinker toys, Lincoln logs, and some other stuff. The puzzles look cute.
Mrs.Gregg
Just be mindful of choking hazards. Tinker toys, Lincon logs etc are choking toys for a 1 yr old. Large wood blocks etc are not. :)

twoxcell
Yes my dh is paranoid of chocking so he only plays with the big things :001_smile:! It is hard to find bigger toys. We have large square wooden blocks with alphabets.
Nancy Ann
Not really educational but this was my daughter's favorite toy for her 1st birthday and she still plays with it. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2333039 Board books I think are great for this age. The best board books that I have gone through 3 of them because they get used so much and so much enjoyed are the ones by Matthew Van Fleet. One is called Tails and the other is called Heads http://www.amazon.com/Heads-Matthew-Van-Fleet/dp/1442403799/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1290540443&sr=1-6 Large wooden nesting blocks are a fav with my kids as well. I like the wooden ones as opposed to the heavy cardboard. http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Wooden-Animal-Nesting/dp/B00146LV70/ref=sr_1_cc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1290540550&sr=1-2-catcorr
twoxcell
Thanks for the board book idea ;). He loves flipping through books and pretending he is reading. I just found these two things that look really cute: http://www.amazon.com/Eric-Carle-Animal-Flash-Cards/dp/0811852563/ref=pd_sim_b_5 http://www.amazon.com/Very-First-Library-Eric-Carle/dp/0399246665/ref=pd_sim_b_44
MissKNG
Thanks for the board book idea Board books with flip flaps are also super fun!
littleWMN
I like board books too for that age. Usbourne makes some fun ones with textures. Got the tractor one for my son who will be 9 months at Christmas.
Rosie_0801
My boy's favourite board books is "Who's Bottom is This?" Potty humour starts young :glare:  Rosie
Chris in VA
Lauri has a nice set with rubber mats, shapes and pegs. Discovery Toys has a bunch of great stuff (used to sell for them) if you don't mind plastic. My fav is the stacking cups. They are volumetrically correct, so you can even cook with them. Oballs are fun. How about some Melissa and Doug wooden fruits that your child can cut with a wooden knife (they are velcro'd together)? RoundAbout
I bought my son a big set of wooden unit blocks for his first birthday. He's almost 4 and still plays with them every single day.
Tracy
My kids both spent a lot of time with Peek-a-blocks. They also loved the Word Whammer.
eloquacious
I got my younger son the stacking measuring cups from Discovery Toys, as the PP mentioned, as well as a ton of books. He's not 1 yet, but then he's also well set with toys from his brother.
weddell
My kids both spent a lot of time with Peek-a-blocks. They also loved the Word Whammer. My one year old learned the alphabet song and to recognize all his letters with a word whammer I bought at a garage sale. (Not that I don't sing the alphabet to him as well, but he really liked this)
