Dh isn't sure yet if all his questions have been answered and we are awaiting a call back from our clinic regarding side effects, etc. Since it is a blood pressure med being used off list for adhd, I am wondering how much that could affect a child with normal bp, what to look for that might be problematic, etc. Our pharmacy was not familiar with it being used for adhd so no info there. I am just wondering about experiences others have had with it. This is his first try at meds and I am feeling like we still need a little hand holding to get started!:confused: We are having a difficult time taking this step. Thanks much! It's important that the doctor prescribing meds like Tenex to kids have the necessary expertise to fine-tune the dosage and also be available on an ongoing basis to monitor side effects (the major side effect my daughter had while taking Tenex was that she kept falling asleep and we frequently had great difficulty waking her up, which was pretty alarming :tongue_smilie:.) We weren't prepared for these side effects, and couldn't reach the doctor for several days while this was happening. I don't know if frequently falling into a deep sleep is typical starting out with Tenex or if the intial dosage was too high (Tenex was prescribed by a developmental pediatrician, and he lacked expertise in the medication area). We switched to an experienced pediatric psychiatrist and when he prescribed Clonidine instead, there were no coma-like sleeping spells, even at the outset. What type of doctor is ordering this? How old is your child? Have they tried other meds first? Tenex is used for ADHD but there are a lot of other options out there first. Ottakee Posted November 24, 2010 Share Posted November 24, 2010 OK. I just saw that he was 11 and this was his first med. Did the doctor say why they weren't starting with something like Ritalin or other stimulant? Those are the first choice meds for ADHD.
