What are all the subjects you teach for 7th-8th grade?

Recommended Posts

Right now ds (7th grade) is doing:

bible

math

science

history

language arts

latin

piano

He doesn't like sports so his phys ed consists mostly of stuff he likes to do (like swim, golf, etc.). Not a big artsy guy either but very techie so he does graphic art stuff on the computer for fun.

Right now it seems to be going well but I am planning for next year and wondering if there are other things I might want to add in?

What are YOU teaching?

We don't really do grades, but if ds was in school he'd be in 7th. If he had been born 2 days earlier, he'd be in 8th :001_huh: We also tend towards being relaxed homeschoolers. Not every subject is done every day.

math

science (chemistry)

history (American this year)

U.S. geography

language arts

Spanish

I plan to sign him up for a Florida Virtual School class on career education after the first of the year.

He takes weekly guitar lessons at a local music store. Plays/practices at home the rest of the week.

He loves art, and takes a once a month art class with a local artist in her home (with a few other homeschooled kids).

He's not sports oriented either, but he goes to agility classes with his dog (a Sheltie) once a week. We built some agility equipment for backyard practice. He's entered one trial so far, and wants to enter more. With agility, the handler is as active as the dog, so he gets plenty of exercise. He also throws the football and rides bikes with some of the neighborhood kids.

When dd gets to 7th, I think she will do

math

logic

science

lang arts, including grammar, writing, light analysis of lit, and possibly vocab

french

latin if I can outsource it

history

art, definitely outsourced

bible

Every day will be grammar, math, lit, french, latin, bible and piano/viola

Every other day will be science, history, logic, vocab and writing

Once a week will be choir, dance, art

My older ds goes to school only 2 hours a day (for language arts and history) and homeschools the rest of the time (primarily online/DVD classes). A combination of having been homeschooled his whole life (and thus not really liking traditional school) and the fact that his tourette's went BERSERK with all the sensory input means he was miserable.

The part-time thing is working really well for him right now. We are taking it one semester at a time. :D

Younger ds is in 1st grade at my school. And of course Princess Natty-Pants is at home with her ahma.

The common thing I see among many of you that I am not doing is logic. That was on my list of things to add. I was thinking of starting with the Fallacy Detective????

I started homeschooling ds when he was a 9th grader, and we used FD--he never had any logic, and was very weak in that area.

FD was fun, but I wish I had started with something different. It is very organized (by type of fallacy) and clear, but I wish I had used some sort of introduction that told us what logic IS, and how to approach the thinking behind it.

IIWY, fwiw, I'd think about going with Traditional or Introductory Logic (as in WTM) first, then bring in FD, then do Material Logic in 9th. If TL or IL seem too much, I'd start with Mindbenders and logic games like Suduko.

Just my opinion.

Math

Latin

Greek

Literature

Writing

Grammar

Occasionally spelling

Science (too sporadically)

History (seems like we're the history channel around here-history 24/7)

Geography (he does on his own--it's his love)

Logic (my older two really enjoyed FD-I wasn't impressive-same w/Red Herrings-doubly unimpressed).

Art class

Swim lessons

CC

He's super sports oriented, so there's some activity we're doing every day/night.

We're sorely lacking in music. We've done some music appreciation, but no lessons (too busy w/sports).

For seventh, this year, we are doing:

Bible

Geography

Language Arts (Vocab; Grammar; Writing; Lit and his personal reading)

Math

Latin and Greek

Spanish

Logic (sometimes, LOL)

History

Science

Art (and drama)

Music (piano and guitar)

PE (soccer, volleyball)

He's doing PE instead of volleyball next semester; and chess instead of drama (unless our local children's theatre also offers drama and he decides to take it, too).... He may not get to continue with guitar if we can't work out a teacher....

He's doing LEGO League right now, but that will be ending soon.

For eighth grade, I'm looking at pretty much the same subjects....
