In honor of tonight's midnight opening of the 7th Harry Potter movie, I've written a post detailing what I do in my Harry Potter class for homeschoolers: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2010/11/how-to-teach-harry-potter.html

We cover a ton of fun and academic topics and in the class and I'd be thrilled if it inspires any Potteresque studies to spice up your own homeschool routine.

Hope you enjoy!

Holly Van Houten

P.S. I'm posting a link to the blog because it's just too much detail to include here. Hope nobody minds.

Follow Up

Glad people are finding it useful. Feel free to post the link to anyone you think might find it helpful. I've also written in greater length about the writing I do with homeschoolers here: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2010/...schoolers.html

and here: http://www.knittedthoughts.com/2010/...with-kids.html

The 1st applies to everyone, but the writing suggestions apply to even the youngest homeschoolers.

The 2nd applies primarily to tweens and teens.

I just finished teaching a Harry Potter class for our co-op! We only have ten weeks each term, so we didn't get to cover nearly as much as your class. What ages did you do this with? My group ranged from 7 - 11 and I think your writing activities would have been above most of them. The high point for us was playing (bludger-free) Quidditch during the final class. :D This syllabus looks fantastic!

Hi Jen,

I had two classes last year. One was 8-10 (Realm of Wizardry) and the other was Hogwarts at Huck (I teach at the Huckleberry Center for Creative Learning -- a homeschool co-op in Santa Clarita, CA) for that you had to be 11+.

Both classes wrote for the Daily Prophet though. Some did it on their own, some worked with each other or with a parent, but they all LOVED seeing their article in print! Many were on the silly side, but that was part of the fun :)
