The Phantom Tollbooth, Rabbit Hill, BFG, Danny the Champion of the World, Mysterious Benedict Society (all 3)

:D

If I said that I was only going to read 5 books to my children what would you suggest? I would love your Top 5 Suggestions (other than The Bible, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings Series).

Edited to add...I have a 6th, 4th, and 2nd grader, if that matters.

It's too broad... I don't think I can give it a list that does the question justice. But, trying not to overlap with others, how about...

The Penderwicks by Jeanie Birdsall

The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

The Tale of Despereaux

Arabel's Raven by Joan Aiken

But that's just off the top of my head... Too much...

6th and 4th

At that age some of my boys favorites were-

Boy (they still quote from it and they are 17yo and 19yo now)

My Side of the Mountain

Rascal

2nd grade is so much younger

At that age they all enjoyed

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing

No matter the age The Tale of Despereaux and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever are fabulous.

Also, my kids have never particularly enjoyed listening to me read. These are all audio books that have been favorites.

My kids are younger. The biggest hit for all of us, right now:)....

Rhoade Dahl. (sp?) We're on our 4th or 5th and we all love him. I don't normally do well reading chapter books ( I do a lot of audio books), but I enjoy reading him.

Other authors that are hits: ( I'm sooo cheating at your assignment)

Francis Hodgson Burnett

Noel Streatfield

Frank Baum

E. B. White

Laura Ingalls Wilder

How can I choose! I feel like I'm betraying my best friends!

Okay--deep breath. Don't tell the others!

1. Pollyanna--the kind of book that changes you as you read it.

2. Where the Red Fern Grows

3. The Bronze Bow--I remember reading this is when I was in 5th grade and have never forgotten it. Made Jesus more real to me than ever!

4. Anne of Green Gables

5. Little House Series!

My oldest is a girl--can you tell :) :)

Wow - that's hard to nail down to only five. For that age range, some of our favorites are:

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

My Side of the Mountain by Jean C. George

The Red Pony (short story by John Steinbeck)

This thread inspired me to spend even more money than I have lately on children's books... having recently bought most of the Sonlight P3/4 readers and some of the books listed on Ambleside Online and The Good Books program, I now also bought a set of 15 Roald Dahl books. It goes against my instinct, because I have been wanting to get hardcovers whenever possible, and to buy used if possible.... but $25 for 15 paperbacks can't really be beat. If you're a Costco member, keep your eyes peeled: the collection contains

The Magic Finger

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Esio Trot

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Boy: Tales of Childhood

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator

The Twits

James and the Giant Peach

Danny the Champion of the World

George's Marvelous Medicine

Going Solo

The BFG

Matilda

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me

The Witches

My kids aren't old enough yet for us to have developed our top 5 list, but I am currently reading them Pippi Longstocking and all 3 of them think it uproariously hilarious. They laugh through every chapter.

Have you read them Mrs. Piggle Wiggle? My kids loved those books, especially when they were that age.
