Is the Instructors Video necessary?

No. I would say that the Verbal Problems book is, however.

I like having it because: 1) I don't like the visuals in the book, and 2) I need something that's a snap to implement. If either of those are less important to you than the money, then of course don't get the dvd. I think the dvd is TERRIFIC and highly recommend.

Hmmmm, I'll have to think about that then. I'm terrible at explaining math, so maybe I'll get the DVD's.

I guess, I am the odd one out here. I would say that the DVD is necessary, especially if you feel a bit week in math. My son loves it, and it does a much better job explaining than I could.

The only problem we are having is in how we read some of the story problems. They will state something similar to If Jon's age is twice Al's age plus Pat's age, what are each of their ages?

 

Both dd and I will read that as (2 x Al's age) plus Pat's age. What it means is (Al's age + Pat's age)2. It is irritating, and I which it was stated a little more clearly, but the bigger problem is probably that we read it in phrases. Both of us are probably better off learning to be more careful in how we read it.

We're just starting and I wouldn't want to do it without the DVD. I made straight As in Algebra (many long years ago :)) but just looking at the book was confusing to me. The DVD is very straightforward and, to me anyway, worth the $.
