Hmmm, that looks fun! I think I'd do both. You still need the HOE, because it's NOT the same. Besides, the dvd's for HOE are way cool, with the guy and his big glasses and beret. But I digress. Get HOE and then get this for a fun supplement. I just went back and looked some more. It's hard to tell from the toc for it, but did you look at the sample pages? This is totally not the sequential, hands-on approach to basic equation work that HOE covers. The book you found is really cool, but it's no substitute.

This book series is not at all like HoE. There is no hands-on work with manipulatives, and as OhElizabeth mentioned, this does not have the step-by-step lessons to solving algebraic equations.

 

This book series does look good, though. Thanks for the link. The nearest thing I have seen to this are the balance puzzles in the CIMT-MEP practice books.
