Frontier Mom
I think he sounds fun but I was rather surprised by a few things in the book. For instance, why would a fifth-grade teacher feel the need to put curse words in the book?:glare: I've been known to use a few from time to time, but was kinda surprised because they didn't really fit. I think he has some great ideas and want to look up some web sites he suggested. Just wondering if anyone has looked into any of his recommendations or had an opinion on his ideas. I think he sounds like an extremely devoted teacher, what with being there early, staying late and being there on Saturdays. I also think teachers that devoted are not too plentiful, but I could be wrong.
dangermom
I enjoyed the book, but the man is clearly one in a billion. I don't expect to ever run into such a dedicated teacher in my lifetime.
Carol in Cal.
I ran across his books just as DD was beginning 5th grade. They gave me a more accelerated view of what that age could do, and I am grateful for that. I also have used his approach to literary discussions a lot in my literature group. And his emphasis on teaching test taking tricks, including figuring out why tests have particular wrong answers in them, and the humor that he uses in teaching this material, have been helpful to me in preparing DD for CA state tests. Generally I find his results and energy inspiring, although I suspect that he would be arrogant and insufferable in person. I did see him speak in San Diego, to a very large audience, and it was a good venue for him. But I'll bet that I would not like him personally. That's funny because I wondered how ps teachers would view his book. He seems to slam some pretty hard.
