Karie
He just turned 9 and I can't stand his handwriting. I don't know what to do. He practices everyday, but he just doesn't have that great of writing. I know he tries, but it still comes out sloppy. I feel like I'm picking on him about something he may not be able to control. Is this just one of those areas I need to give a little and hope his handwriting improves over time? He has good grammar, punctuation, and spelling, it's just his handwriting that annoys me! Sue G in PA
:D Even when he prints I can't read it. With a child, as long as he is trying his best and writing as neat as he can...I wouldn't bother him. My ds9 had/has great handwriting, but he rushes and thus his writing turns out sloppy. Is your ds rushing through his work, not being careful? How are his fine-motor skills in other areas? I don't think it is necessarily a "problem". Some people just don't write as neatly and prettily as others (my dh is a prime example!).

Fine motor skills development is still at play. This is a trouble area for many boys. Give time - it will get better, maybe not perfect, but better. Spend you time focusing on the grammar. Just my opinion, but in the end, grammar is more important!
Pink Fairy
I wouldn't worry--I think it's a boy thing (or that's my experience anyway). If you feel like he's trying, there's no problem. Like you said, you don't want to pick at him for something he can't help. His handwriting will likely improve as he gets older. :001_smile:
Dani n Monies Mom
I don't have a son, but I can relate to the experience through my dd. At nine and 10 her handwriting (she's a lefty, don't know if that really matters) was absolutely atrocious. But this year, at 12, her handwriting has improved enormously. We didn't do any handwriting programs or anything, I think it's just her fine motor skills, as someone mentioned above, are developing. Oakblossoms
I think it's normal. For what it's worth my boys are doing much better since we moved to Italics.
Karie
Okay, so I won't stress over this, then. I'll just hope his fine motor skills improve over the next few years. For what it's worth, his cursive is much neater, but then again, he has to really think it through when he writes. With manuscript he goes faster since it comes easier to him. sadiegirl
I, too, have a son that has handwriting that drives me crazy. I think I expect more out of him because I know when he tries to write neatly that he does a beautiful job. However, consistency doesn't exist in his case! The more important thing is that WHEN it counts---like on a project or letter, etc. he does a great job. My brother always had horrible writing but he is an incredible artist, poet and writer. So, I guess for those of us that feel the need to be "neat freaks" on handwriting---maybe we should focus on the content, effort and individual style put forth!
