Nakia
My oldest loves rocks. She collects them everywhere we go. I would like to get her a nice rock collection for Christmas. I know she would love it! Can anyone recommend a nice rock/mineral collection and also a field guide? I have looked at http://www.hometrainingtools.com, and there are many to choose from there. I just don't know which ones are the best quality. This is the one I have been eyeing, but it seems like a huge collection, and if I get a good field guide, it's more than I wanted to spend. I was thinking $50 for the collection and the field guide, if that's possible. There is a study guide included with collection I linked, but I would like to get her a real field guide instead. Thanks!!
Dawn in Ohio
http://www.amazon.com/GeoCentral-Box-of-Rocks-Kit/dp/B0006PKYVE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1289357353&sr=8-1 This one doesn't have that many rocks, but I like that each rock is a good, substantial size. Much better than other collections that my kids have gotten, where the rocks are quite small. (My boys love rocks. The local rock and gem show is the highlight of their year!) Tylianna
Could you buy the field guide, then purchase the rocks separately? There are many places that sell them. Maybe I am thinking of something different...?

Maybe I am thinking of something different...? Yes, I actually went ahead and ordered a pocket field guide for her, and now I would like to purchase a nice rock collection. I might end up getting the one I linked in my first post. I know the samples are on the small side, but there are so many, and I know she would love it. Denise in Florida
You might try your local gem and mineral society. There are several national organizations that have clubs in some cities. I don't know if there is one near you. I have been to one of the meetings near me, they had educational presentations, rock-hunting field trips and a youth program. I also go to the gem and mineral shows. My dd loves to jewelry shop at the shows. At the most recent show there was a vendor selling 'grab bag' style boxes of rocks. You didn't know what you would get but the price was very reasonable and I saw several moms of small children buying boxes. This is an awesome hobby. I hope she enjoys what you find. I actually went ahead and ordered this for her. It's a whole project kit instead of just a collection. I thought she might like to do some things with the rocks. I hope she likes it! This is the one I have been eyeing, but it seems like a huge collection, and if I get a good field ! The 75 set is 3/4-1". The 50 set is 1" or more. I'd go with the larger pieces.
