Tonia
I'm working on a memorization list for next year (dd will be 5) - any recommendations for poetry, Scripture, etc.? I have a few ideas but my brain can't seem to come up with much more
Shelly in VA
We used Sonlight in K, and they include a set of Bible verses for each letter of the alphabet in the Instructor's Guide. My dd loved that she knew a whole alphabet of verses by the end of the year! We also memorized things like "30 days hath September, April, June...", days of the week, and some brief poems (one about penguins, which dd is a fanatic about, and one about ducks when we made a Ping lapbook, that sort of thing). 10 Commandments, Lord's Prayer, and the Apostles' Creed. HTH! Shelly
Philothea
I like classic nursery rhymes, like Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill. We also like to memorize songs like Three Blind Mice or Baa Baa Black sheep too.
...................
to do anything formal with a K'er. I personally found it wasn't the time yet for that sort of thing. What we did enjoy and feel was age appropriate, though was the Scripture Verses A to Z. Sonlight and several other homeschool companies sell it. I just love this one, and we memorized 26 verses painlessly. The same people that did A-Z also made a new CD called, "Sing the Word, the New Commandment." Another one we are doing this year is Judy Rogers CD's. You can buy these from Rainbow Resource or Christian Liberty Press. I then take the verses on the CD's (LONG after I think they're already memorized) and use them for review. But since they're from A to Z usually we can remember what's next just by thinking of the next letter of the alphabet.
Vita Passiva
We are doing the Bible story and verse memory found at http://www.hubbardscupboard.org under Christian Resources. We do one a week. There is a printout for most verses which includes a picture. For the ones not listed to print I just make my own. My dc are 4 and 2 and they both love memorizing the little songs or chants that go with the verse. I find they are very applicable to life situations as well, so we talk about them as we go through our week. I post the verse and refer to it, but nothing really "formal." I find they just memorize naturally.....songs, poems, and verses. It's helpful and practical for me, too!
Tonia
I post the verse and refer to it, but nothing really "formal." I find they just memorize naturally.....songs, poems, and verses. It's helpful and practical for me, too! Thanks! This is where we are at, as well. DD just naturally memorizes everything so I want to have a few things up my sleeve that I can pull out for those times when I can't think of anything  Thanks so much, everyone! Mom4Jesus
The Notgrass company has some neat books that are a series of Draw to Learn, where you take a Scripture verse and draw a picture to go with it to help you remember.
Pine Ledge Academy
Another idea...lyrical science, science facts to song (pick the shorter ones,) they are funny!, Beethoven's Wig cd's are classical music with words, we learn alot of facts about composers or instruments with these, and they recognize the music if they hear it somewhere. Steve Green kids cd's are all Scripture....can you tell we like to learn to music. Geography cd's, we have learned the state capitals to song, we also do Bible verses and a catechism each week, plus classic poems, like Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Preamble to the Constitution is do-able, Pledge of Allegiance, Patriotic songs. The songs are the thing for us, they don't realize they are learning, and it keeps us happy in the car. Pine Ledge Academy
ok, sorry, I missed your location at first, but I am sure there are some crossover patriotic songs, and Canadian flag pledges and such that would be great too.
Aletheia Academy
My dc just love memorization tasks. They have memorized the U.S. Presidents, the Greek alphabet, the books of the Bible, a portion of the periodic table, at least a dozen verses of Scripture, a bit of poetry, etc. My ds is working on the addition math facts. It is not a daunting task. We spend just a few minutes a day. It is amazing what the little ones can do. They will forget, though, if the material is not reviewed for a long time. I think this early stage is the perfect time to memorize. It seems a lot easier for them than it is for me! Isn't it good brain exercise? Of course, we wouldn't force this if they didn't enjoy it. Warmly,
JenneinCA
When my kids were that age we worked on their name, address and phone number. It is one of those things that is important but I tend to forget to include.
Laurel
Check out this free file at Lulu: Grammar Stage Memorization. It's got some great suggestions of poems, scripture, and facts to memorize. We (almost 5 year old) have memorized days of the week, seasons, and months of the year, The 5 Vowels and The Consonant Rhyme (from OPGTR), and two poems "Try, Try Again" and "1, 2 Buckle My Shoe." She LOVES to show off how well she can recite the poems. (Amazing, as she is especially sensitive, and really does not like to perform for people...) We have address, full name, parents' names, etc. memorized. We are working on phone numbers. For K, I don't necessarily have any specific goals of "these are what I want to have memorized" but we do work on memory work when we feel like it, and we have fun. Twinmom
We enjoy working our way through the Scripture memory and occasional hymn, etc. laid out in the Truth and Grace Memory Book series (http://www.founderspress.com/shop/store.php?crn=206&rn=417&action=show_detail). I have found it both easy and joyful to do, my kids have loved it, and we've had fun using it for copywork, dictation, memorization, study of sentence structure, poetry and (of course!) as a faith building exercise! The series begins with basics for 2-3 year olds and goes all the way through high school (but can be started at any age and worked through at your own pace...we started in 1st grade). It lays out a series of scripture memory verses that builds systematically so that all major tenets of the Christian faith are addressed/memorized by the time you are through. At the end of each book is a list of catechism-type questions you can discuss with your kiddos to ensure that they truly understand the scripture they have memorized and to ensure that their faith makes sense to them. kls126s
We do quite a few of the above for memory work too, but I just thought I'd mention hymns also. We always start school with Bible reading and I choose a different hymn each month. I have the words printed out for dd6 so she can read along. We just sing it once through, unless they want to sing it again. Usually by the end of the month they have all the verses memorized. It's amazing how many hymns they know just because of this. kimmyandgracie
Ambleside Online has some good hymn and folksong selections with links to a recording of the tune that might be helpful. I also have a dd who will be a K'er this upcoming school year and I am getting some good ideas from this thread, too.
Tonia
Oh my! You guys are just wonderful :grouphug: I hadn't thought of half these things. I will be adding them to my list. Thanks so much!
Reya
I'm working on a memorization list for next year (dd will be 5) - any recommendations for poetry, Scripture, etc.? I have a few ideas but my brain can't seem to come up with much more  I'm having them do Sonlight's Bible verse program as well as memorize two nursery rhymes a week. I'm also taking stuff from other subjects--like the planets and the taxonomic groups--and adding that in as they come up. We also do singing--one hymn and two kiddie songs a week. I think they're just becoming familiar with the hymns at this point--most are WAY too hard for them to sing!
