plain jane
Has anybody here played Mancala? This is the one that I am thinking of getting. Is it a good game that you and your kids enjoy playing over and over?
Truscifi
I don't have that particular one, the one we have has little smooth pebbles instead of beads. But we love the game. :001_smile:
Jean in Newcastle
Mancala is one game we have but never really got into.

plain jane
Mancala is one game we have but never really got into. Do you know what it is about the game you don't enjoy as much as others? I've never heard of this game but it came recommended to me. I don't want to get something that'll just sit on the shelf.
laundrycrisis
I loved mancala when I was introduced to it in 4th grade. I recently bought a travel set at WM for $5 ! It's a nice wood board with different colored glass nuggets for pieces. Our 7.5 yo loves it, and even our 5 yo plays it with me. Great game ! QuirkyKapers
My kids love it! We actually just used half of and egg carton and beans :)
ChristusG
We have mancala and play it occasionally. I get a little bored with it since I'm just dropping pebbles around a circle.
bookfiend
The great thing about this game is that one round takes 10 minutes or less; what other kids games can you say that about?
TheCoffeeChick
My kids love it! We actually just used half of and egg carton and beans :) This is how we always played too! :)
laughing lioness
Yes. We've really like playing this game- it's fast, cheap, fun and anyone can learn it- even a 4 yo can win.

Mama2Many4
We play Mancala weekly! I always drop it into my oldest son's fun box and we play together. I love that it really makes him count and figure out what moves to make, and we always enjoy it! This is my 100th post!!!!!!! Wow, that was corny. LOL
Miss Peregrine
It becomes more fun when the kids realize how to strategize. We go through spurts of playing it but all the kids like it.
Alessandra
We love it -- not something you can play all the time, like chess, but fun for occasional play. We are big fans of traditional games and games from other cultures -- mancala fits the bill. You can use the game as part of an African unit study, if you wish. cajunrose
I have never played, but I had to add my daughter's experience with it. I took her to Indonesia to a tiny little village there to hand deliver toys to an orphanage. My then 6 year old dd learned to play mancala on the floor of this orphanage with children that she could not communicate with. She will never forget how to play...or how she learned to play. Here are pictures: http://cajunhomeschool.blogspot.com/2009/11/once-in-lifetime.html Thank you for the trip down memory lane. It was a year ago but seams like a lifetime. HLDoll
We have it and my kids enjoy it. You should be able to pick up a version in a local store for under $10 and most of them are nice wooden boards with glass beads or stone pebbles. I know Target and toy stores in our mall had them on sale for $5 around Christmas last year.

plain jane
Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I just wanted to update and share that I did go ahead and purchase the game and my family really loves it. I like that the 4 year old can play and isn't at a huge disadvantage when playing my oldest (so far anyways). Great game!
Word Nerd
My older DD loved it, and we played it a lot with her. Now my younger daughter is past the age (in theory, anyway) that I had to put it up so she wouldn't put the stones in her mouth, so I might try playing with her now. ereks mom
This is the one we have. It came from Walmart, I think, and it was around $5-$7.
Mejane
Mancala is addictive. We played it obsessively for weeks when we got it, then put it away and haven't touched it since. hmm... maybe I'll get it out for T'giving day. :001_smile:
Laurie4b
Yes. I like Mancala. There is strategy to it. It's fun.
