We're doing a modified Year 8 and will be doing the rest of the AO years, modified too, for high school. I think if I had followed the CM method completely and truly from the beginning then I might not have needed to adapt so much. I do think that AO is better laid out than I had originally thought. I had the same fears and reading other books (LCC) and looking at other curriculums (classical) did make me question some aspects of it. I look at it now and see more to it. You have to really read everything on their booklists as well as much about CM as possible (her books, others more experienced who follow her methods, etc.). I think AO did a great job of adding to her methods. I also see nothing wrong with adapting and integrating other ideas/books. I think if you understand her philosophy and methods first, then the books can be adapted as needed. This is just my own opinion of course. I personally don't care for the Apologia series for science, so we will make changes here in the high school years. I also am adding Classical Writing. I happen to think this will not stray from CM too much. :D

I also integrate ideas from WTM too.

Here are two sites I like to keep up with:

mmm this is what I think I may do as far as history goes. I love WTM history i those 4 year blocks and jumping to something different now will make holes--though I think I'm going to slow down as far as the list and just dig in deep. Other than that-I think I'm going to stick to the AO. I'm also going to add some more project based work that is worked out over months.

For the littles, I'm going to add in French as that's the language I'm most proficient in.

after much reading, and researching, I can see why they hold off 'proper' grammar until the later grades-because with all of the copy work and dictation, they should be internalizing proper grammar and only later should need to deconstruct it. She's using the language itself to teach proper form instead of using the curric building proper grammar (which, by the way we've been taught, DOEs makes sense to an adult-building from the ground up-but the ground is actually good reading and proper language). The dictation is where I can see I need to work more and that is something WTM also talks about but I never quite did though I've always done lots of narration and copywork.

I can imagine the languages also teach grammar.

those links look great! thanks!
