Your top 5 favorite albums

Recommended Posts

You know - the kind you can listen to the whole album all the way through because *all* the songs are good. ;)

I don't often listen to music, preferring silence most of all, but at any given time I can be convinced to listen to some certain albums.

I'll go first, in no particular order:

Tom Waits - Closing Time

Iron and Wine - Shepherd's Dog

Rocky Votolato - Makers

Shrek soundrack (the first one)

Twilight Soundtrack ( what can I say?)

Two close contenders would be The Charlie Byrd Trio at the Village Gate and The Juno Soundtrack.

How 'bout you?

Fun! I'll try. I love lots of different music, but albums where I love every song is rare. In no order:

Death Cab For Cutie: Plans

Sigur Ros: Takk

Duran Duran: Rio

Depeche Mode: Black Celebration

Interpol: Our Love to Admire

Honorable Mention--The Pogues: Rum, Sodomy, & The Lash and/or If I Should Fall From Grace with God (tie)

I'm sure if you asked me tomorrow, or next week, this list would change.

Many of my favorite SONGS aren't even on the above albums. I have favorite songs from Guided by Voices, Sting, The Cure, and Tom Waits!

I actually listen to mostly classical music now....but I have no idea who I'm listening to usually :001_smile:.

Nope! :D

But it's my husbands favorite!

It's Rudimentary Peni Death Church

Did you get see Van Morrison last summer at the Hollywood Bowl? He played the whole Astral Weeks record. It was like a dream.

That's a perfect record, I'm adding to my 5 favorite records list.

My husband is insisting the number needs to be increased to 10. He's pacing in front of our records. This kind of question gets him all worked up.

I'm going to put on some Michael Franks to mess with him! :001_smile:

I think mine were from all around the same year so I'm sure I will date myself.

Nirvana - Nevermind album and Unplugged in New York album

Green Day - Dookie

Hole - Live Through This

Offspring - Smash

Weezer - The Blue Album

Memories of my teens. I actually haven't bought an album in years. I download songs here and there, but to actually buy a whole album I need it to be some seriously good music from start to finish....no fillers.

I can't really choose just five, but I'll share the first five that come to mind:

The Clash -- London Calling

Cowboy Junkies -- The Trinity Session

The Replacements -- Pleased to Meet Me

Pink Floyd -- The Final Cut

The Kinks -- I can't possibly choose... practically their entire discography through Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One in 1970

My top 5 favorites, not the albums I think are the best albums, but the ones I enjoy the most, right (for whatever reason)?

Okay, without reading the list of anyone else (don't want to be improperly influenced, but I may therefore be forgetting a great album or ten):

Astral Weeks by Van Morrison

Achtung Baby by U2 (I KNOW it's not their best album, okay? It's partly sentimental.)

The Singles by The Clash (Do compilation albums count? This is probably cheating.)

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd

Rubber Soul by The Beatles

If I have to pick only 5, I guess that's it. I feel like I'm leaving out a lot of great albums though.

I never get to listen to any of "my" music anymore - the kids have taken over with their classical music!

Here are some I've listened to over and over, before kids or on the rare occasions that they're not here (and yes, there's nothing new here - have I mentioned that I never get to listen to anything but classical anymore?). In no particular order (and oops it's more than 5):

Christine Lavin - Attainable Love

Patty Larkin - Step into the Light

Gipsy Kings

The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

The The - Mind Bomb

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

Suzanne Vega - her first album with Marlene on the Wall on it

Sting - Dream of the Blue Turtles

Chess - album out before the actual musical

Pink Floyd -Animals

OMD - Crush and Dazzle Ships

Dead Can Dance - Into the Labyrinth

Cirque de Soleil - Alegria

Sinead O'Connor - The Lion and the Cobra

Susan MeKeown - The Mother Album

Discovery String Band - Most Perfect Harmony

I apparently live in a different musical universe from everyone else. I have never heard of most of the music the rest of you like.:001_smile: I don't think we own any of these anymore, they were mostly tapes and we have no tape player.

Madonna Like a Virgin

Motley Crue Too Fast for Love

Whitesnake Whitesnake

Quiet Riot Metal Health

Ratt Out of Cellar

And I mean the albums released in the '80s, not re-releases. And that dates me pretty well.

DH's are a little different from mine. He says to mention that he likes many types of music, just not entire albums of other kinds.

Slayer Seasons in the Abyss

White Zombie Astro Creep 2000

Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine

Judas Priest Screaming for Vengeance

Grand Magus Monument

The The - Mind Bomb
I went through four copies of Soul Mining. I'd lend it to a friend and not get it back. After the third time... lesson learned. :)

Hmmm... great question! These are the ones I enjoy the most, but I wouldn't call them the best (except for U2).

U2 - The Joshua Tree

Keith Urban - Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing

Casting Crowns - The Altar and the Door

Counting Crows - August and Everything After

Train - Drops of Jupiter

The The - Mind Bomb

Sting - Dream of the Blue Turtles

Cirque de Soleil - Alegria

Oo, The The is great too! And Sting ... I had the privilege of seeing him in concert - that man is good! :tongue_smilie:

And Alegria ... I think that one is probably the best music Cirque de Soleil has ever done. I LOVE the title song.

Yes!

I've actually seen him play (late 80's). It was a funny night. I actually like a few of his records. I don't mind getting rousted for it. :D

What's wrong with Michael Franks? I love him!

Daddy's just like Coltrane,

Baby's just like Miles,

Lady's just like heaven when she smiles.

U2: Joshua Tree

The Beatles: The White Album

Counting Crows: August and Everything After

Edgar Meyer, Mark O'Connor, and Yo-Yo Ma: Appalachian Journey

Bach: Cello Concertos

Sweeny Todd Soundtrack

Paul Simon: Graceland

I know it's six, but I couldn't decide who to leave off.

I cannot do 5... and I cannot really think of ones I would later....

But here are a few albums that would go into my "can listen to the whole album, w/o a clunker" category

PJ Harvey - Dry, Rid of Me, and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea

Yo La Tengo- Painful, I can hear the Heart Beating as One, Electro-O-Pura

Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted

Guided by Voices- Bee Thousand

Throwing Muses- first 4 albums

Stereolab- first 2 albums

Yma Sumac- Voice of the Xtabay

Xavier Cugat's MAMBO!

Patsy Cline's greatest hits

Best of DEVO

Best of Buzzcocks

So.. there are a few to chew on.

I think a top 5 from each year of my life since I discovered Blondie might be easier, if approached one year at a time. It would be pretty funny too. :D

BTW... I will have to go find my cassette copy of Mind Bomb now. Thanks. ;)

We must be the same age;).

My faves are similar.

1) Weezer- Blue Album, Seriously, I almost cried when I though I lost this CD. Love, love, love it.

2) Pearl Jam- Versus and/or Ten

3) Nirvana- Live in New York

4) Violent Femmes- Some older album. Maybe Add It Up?

Did anyone else end up buying a whole bunch of new albums today?

There are so many great ones listed that I haven't listened to in ages...I think I need to block Amazon from my computer for a little while, lol.

What did you buy?

I'm listening to Super Session right now.

So good..

Patsy Cline's greatest hits

My dad loved Patsy Cline. When we were in Norway in the early 90s, I think he about wore out the cassette tape - it was about 20 minutes per side, and really to get anywhere, it took about 40-45 minutes to drive there, which meant we would listen to both sides of the cassette each way! Eventually my grandmother asked if we could play one of my cassettes just to change things up a little. So, we put in Erasure. I have a sentimental place in my heart for Patsy Cline as her songs remind me of my dad.

So far:

Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me

Uncle Tupelo - Still Feel Gone

Both of which I used to have but have long since displaced. Now they are securely loaded onto my MP3:D.

ETA - and I forgot; dd informed she already has Death Cab For Cutie Plans (so she just saved me a few dollars - oh wait - apparently I already spent them but didn't realize it).

Then Nirvana Unplugged, which prompted a search through Dh's car to find Pearl Jam Live at Benaroya Hall, and then I ended up finding my Norah Jones Come Away With Me, so bonus. Then it occurred to me to check ds's room, and I found my The Legend of Johnny Cash cd.

Presently I'm toiling over which Kate Bush to get.
