What should I bring to an international dinner this Saturday?

Recommended Posts

I've brought bulgogi and a mexican bean dip type of dish in the past. I'm looking for something simple, but not boring. It also can't require any exotic ingredients, because the nearest store that might carry them is 50 minutes away. Any ideas?

Oh, it also has to taste really good. :D

A pineapple, however my kids favorite is potstickers. My sister always makes pancakes with apple slices in them from Germany. My kids gobble them up too.

I would suggest maybe kimbap. It is pretty easy to make (well, IMHO) and is almost always a hit when I make it. You can customize kimbap to your preferences too. I usually use cucumber, egg, crab (or carrot for the seafood fearful), and pickled radish. You can also use spinach, kimchii or almost anything else really.

You can get most ingredients at the regular store (including the laver, or seaweed sheets). If you don't have one already, a sushi mat is very helpful and almost imperative. That may be harder to find tho.

Just my suggestion and now I am hungry for kimbap! LOL

Oh, I forgot about this recipe! A filipino friend gave it to me years ago. She called it adobo. I've made it with wings in the past & it was really good. I may end up using this one!

I do need to bring more than one dish, though, so more ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That's the one! I think I'm making it for dinner tonight.

Mmmm! I LOVE that stuff! After reading all these delicious responses, I see a trip the asian grocery is in order. Have you ever had chapche? The noodle stuff with bulgogi in it?

Would this be a side dish to bulgogie or is this a dish by itself? I would love to see your recipe, I like cucumber, egg and crab. :D. IF anyone has a recipe to to seaweed salad too. *grumble grumble* That's my belly.

The easiest would be a big pot of Jasmine rice.

Fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce...easy and can fill with ingredients that you are able to find. I fill with lettuce, shrimp, sometime pork, shredded carrot, julienned jicama(sometimes), cilantro and vermicelli noodles. The rice paper wrap thingies are usually easy to find nowadays. Just dampen them and fill and wrap.

maybe fruit kabobs with tropical fruit such as mango, pineapple, papaya, star fruit, etc...

That will give you an idea but not fully how I make it (which seems a little simpler). As you can see, the variety is endless. Many people think of sushi. It is often a meal in itself and does not need to be a side dish. It is very versatile. I have made it for dinner (just bulgogi and kimbap), made it for lunch, made it for an appetizer and made it for potluck.

The thing I always LOVE in my kimbap (oddly enough really) is the pickled radish. I have never seen it anywhere but at a Korean store. It is made in strips for kimbap. But again, you don't need it in kimbap and can easily use something else.

I was always told that the look of kimbap is almost as important as the taste. Each thing you include in the kimbap is usually a different color (eggs are yellow, cucumber is green, crab or carrots are orange, etc, etc). I often have 2 things that are the same color tho ;) To me, if I can just get it rolled right, I am happy.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me and I can give you my exact recipe.
