Tress
Can any of you recommend a good dictionary for me (not for my children)? I need a good: - English-English dictionary, I'm using an English-Dutch dictionary now, but I'm ready to 'graduate' to a real one ;) I'm also looking for an English theasurus, so any recommendation for that is also welcome. Thanks,
Ester Maria
I usually just go with Oxford (and thumb index edition :D).
Kareni
My preferred thesaurus is Rodale's The Synonym Finder. Are you more interested in British or American English? If the latter, you might consider Longman Dictionary of American English. Regards, Kareni
Tress
When I went to school, we were taught British English, and American English was considered an ugly dialect . Obviously things are changing now :D, but it is still better to play safe and use British spelling and pronunciation. Thanks, Kareni, for mentioning Rodale's Synonym Finder. Oxford.....the Short Oxford? Concise Oxford? The New Shorter Oxford? (Why are they making it so difficult?) Help?

I feel for you with regards to the British vs. the American English. Which Oxford to choose basically depends on how small or massive of a dictionary you want. Personally, I think Concise does the job for the combination of a good coverage and practicability in most of the cases. OED is great, but not exactly "handly" because of the numerous volumes; they also have an online edition one can subscribe to. They also have all kinds of additional dictionaries - theasauruses, synonyms/antonyms, etc.
