EJCMom
...grammar stage books that deal with racism in general, and slavery in particular. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Mimm
There's an American Girls series about Addy. Her family were slaves and ran away to Philadelphia and had to wait for her father to join them.
NanceXToo
I was going to suggest the Addy books, too. My daughter liked those. We also read a book about Harriet Tubman after: http://www.amazon.com/Story-Harriet-Tubman-Conductor-Underground/dp/0440404002

Negin
Wagon Wheels - not racism per se, but beautiful, true-(ish) story - takes place soon after slavery Uncle Jed's Barbershop - about racism, not slavery Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt
Catherine
Who Owns the Sun. It's a painful, but beautiful picture book about a boy discovering his father is a slave, owned by other people. You'll cry, I guarantee it.
LNC
Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco http://www.amazon.com/Pink-Say-Patricia-Polacco/dp/0399226710 I cry every time. One of my favorite picture books for older grammar level children. We've read many of the book in this thread and they are excellent too, especially Addy and If You Lived. BikeBookBread
I don't know your child's age, but a book that seemed to really affect my girls was Molly Bannaky. It is the fictionalized story of an English indentured servant girl who falls in love with her African slave and marry. It is aimed at 2nd through 4th graders (per Amazon) but my girls heard the story when they were 5 and 3 and "got" it.
mcconnellboys
Oh, I thought of another good one: The President of the Underground Railroad http://www.amazon.com/President-Underground-Railroad-Creative-Biography/dp/157505552X
