Laurie4b
We will soon be studying Islam and the Islamic empires in our world history class. I'd like to know your top 3 picks for resources because we'll be spending about a week. On Netflix, I found a PBS documentary called Islamic Empire. If you've seen it, what do you think? What about Islam vs. Islamists / Muslims Against Jihad? I would like accurate history, not glossed over from any point of view. For the Islamic faith, what resource do you recommend? This is for a 12 and 14 year old. Edited October 1, 2010 by Laurie4b1
idnib
Are you thinking of Islam: Empire of Faith? http://www.pbs.org/empires/islam/ That's an excellent documentary. I'm not sure how much money you want to spend, but here's an 8-CD set that would be really good: http://www.sandalaproductions.com/Products/89-vision-of-islam.aspx I'll try and dig up a few others today and I'll post this thread on another thread you might be interested in: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187337

sagira
You could have the kids read the Story of Muhammed and the bio of Saladin, and another resource that is fun to add is Mosque by David Macaulay for the architecture.

Laura Corin
Susanne Strauss Art has a book - I haven't used it, but the others of hers that I have read have been reliable. Laura

Laurie4b
Here's a resource I plan to use this year, The Story of Islam. Wow. That series looks really good and of course our library doesn't have it! Hmmm. May have to go interlibrary loan on that one.
UmA
I liked The World of Islam up to 1500s by Fiona Macdonald in the Collins Living History Series It is only about 60 pages long, presents documents, artifacts and pictures in the form of sources, and is nicely illustrated. http://www.amazon.com/World-Islam-1500s-Living-History/dp/0003272311 Looks like you could get it quite cheaply, under $10. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago and love the source based presentation. Also there's this short 10 minute video featuring Ben Kingsley that sheds light on the role of the Muslim world in the dark ages: http://vimeo.com/9334270 Enjoy!
