cjzimmer1
I'm looking for ideas for games for upcoming Birthdays and then Christmas. Games we have and enjoy Settlers of Catan Carcassone Puerto Rico Thurns and Taxis Ticket to Ride is already on the list that another relative will be purchasing for us. I'm looking for other games with similar appeal and would like suggestions if your family likes the above games. Thanks

nmoira
There's a bit of a learning curve on these: Agricola Tigris and Euphrates Not so complicated to start: 1910 Expansion for Ticket to Ride Arkham Horror Small World (and expansion packs) Bang! (for a crowd) Lost Cities my 8yo loves Nexus Ops, Runebound, and Forbidden Island (and Small World) I love Bohnanza Shadows over Camelot (co-operative) Lord of the Rings... the Reiner Knizia one (co-operative)
Mrs Mungo
These are not like Settlers, but in my experience the same type of crowd has fun with them (some of these are for older kids, some for younger, some are good for all): Fluxx Chrononauts SET Fish Eat Fish Killer Bunnies (there is also a Kinder Bunnies for the younger set) Loot Dread Pirate

aggieamy
We love Settlers, Carcassone, and Ticket to Ride. We've got Dominion and Zooloretto on our wish list for Christmas based on recommendations from others. We're also looking at the expansion pack Inns and Cathedrals for Carcassone. It looks pretty fun.
TrixieB
Lord of the Rings... the Reiner Knizia one (co-operative) Can you link to this one? I have found a number of LOTR games but can't figure out which one this is.
SailorMom
I forgot to add Java, great game as well.

nmoira
Can you link to this one? I have found a number of LOTR games but can't figure out which one this is. Here it is at Funagain. And here's its Board Game Geek page. The latter lets you find games by designer.
cjzimmer1
I'm loving these suggestions, it's going to be hard to narrow them down. And for those who asked, we have all the expansions to the games listed in the original posts. We like big long complicated games.
justamouse
We love Dread Pirate and I just bought Dominion. Carcassone and Settlers is on the wish list.
meldamo
I'll second some that others have listed and add one or two more: Dominion Pandemic (addicting because it is hard to beat) Small World Bohnanza Killer Bunnies Munchkin Goa
MyBlueLobsters
We love Dread Pirate and I just bought Dominion. Carcassone and Settlers is on the wish list. We LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Dominion. We have all 4 sets out right now....
Karen A
I'll second Zooloretto. It's not as complicated as Settlers--maybe more along the lines of TTRide. I'm not as much of a gamer as the rest of my family, and I think TTRide and Zooloretto go over better with the likes of me and still the gamers like it. Forget-Me-Not
If you don't already have it, the 2-Player Catan Card Game is really fun. I bought it for DHs birthday a couple of months ago and I think I might actually like it better than the board game.

nmoira
Currently working on going through your list but is Lost Cities the board game or the card version? This is the one we have. Here's the Funagain link. It's a handy game to have around, as many don't scale well to two players. We host a Game Day every month, and this has been a welcome addition for those times there are two leftover people waiting to join one of the next "big" games. Odin's Ravens and Babel are also engaging two-player games. Edited September 28, 2010 by nmoira
Julie of KY
Agricola Tigris and Euphartes Dominion Pandemic Ticket to Ride Domaine Caylus Power Grid Quicksand - a quick and easy game Elhambra Elasund 10 days in USA Saint Petersburg Robo Rally Starship Catan ... we have 100's of games, but these are some good ones that might still be available. LostSurprise
Fun games with kids (some are repeats): Pandemic...very good cooperative Dominion...if they can shuffle cards, we usually shuffle for the younger kids but that can hold things up Stone Age...a bit more complicated but fun Metro Chateau Rocquefort..for younger kids mostly, mine like to drop each other down the holes Coloretto..very simple set game Chinatown...good negotiation and trade game Bohnanza...love the trading Blokus Incan Gold..easy, press-your-luck kind of game Ubongo...if you like Tetris this is great 10 Days in the USA (or Europe, Asia, Africa)...light geography game, you can also add multiple versions together Zooloretto..fun zoo game for kids
lauriep
Dominion is great. It's a card game with endless variations.
MamaSheep
We like Dominion and Pandemic a lot at our house too. Tongiaki is fun too, and on a slightly different note, but with a game board you build from hexes, Hey That's My Fish can be fast and fun.
