SamanthaBea
My ds told me that he is interested in Japan and would like to learn more about the culture, history, religion(s), and language. I told him that when we wrap up Ancient Rome, we could take a detour and do a unit study on Japan. Can anyone point me in the right direction for books, documentaries, etc.? I don't know much about Asian history and since he just sprang this on me, I didn't have a chance to research anything when I was putting together his history program for this year. Thank you! :bigear: BTW, he doesn't like anything that he perceives to be "babyish."
elegantlion
This unit study is pretty decent. We're focusing solely on Asian history this year, with a focus on Japan. We'll be using the linked study later this year. Also here are a few books we're using. The Asian World Ugh, my break is just over. Must get back to teaching. I'll post more when we get another break.

I just ordered The European World 400-1450 for our next history text! :D Have you used this unit study? http://www.currclick.com/product_info.php?products_id=818&it=
meet me in paris
Have you used this unit study? http://www.currclick.com/product_info.php?products_id=818&it=1 I like the look of that unit study! We're doing SL Core 5 (Eastern Hemisphere) and I'm beefing it up a bit... that might be a nice addition. Although, I don't like that they call the bundle the "Oriental Bundle". That sounds a bit... archaic, no? :glare:
SnegurochkaL
We did study a topic on Japan briefly 2 years ago using Galloping the Globe curriculum. We will be studying it more again because of Japanese language which my kids will be learning in a year or so. As far as books recommendation, take a look at this links: Japan: Peeps at History by John Finnemore http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=finnemore&book=japan&story=_contents Child Life in Japan by William E. Griffis http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=griffis&book=child&story=_contents Historical Tales: Japanese and Chinese by Charles Morris http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=morris&book=japanese&story=_contents The Story of Japan by R. Van Bergen http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=bergen&book=japan&story=_contents This are free resources. If I come across of anything else, I will let you know. Japan: An Illustrated History - this is a fairly quick read I bought to give myself an overview of Japanese history. I bought a used copy very inexpensively. Traditional Japan - found this book on paperbackswap, a nice overview. Tales from Japan - another good resource. Katherine Paterson has some good books on Japan.
