Explore, Calculators and MUS

Recommended Posts

I signed my son up for the Explore test in Jan and I just realized that he has NEVER used a calculator. He is finishing up MUS Zeta (decimals) and will be starting Pre-Alg soon. Any ideas how to introduce and incorporate the calculator in his daily studies? Will a basic dollar store calculator do or does he need a fancy one for the test?

DS had never used a calculator when I first signed him up for the Explore, so I had him do seven problems a day - add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, percents, and a word problem - just to practice with the calculator. That was only for a few weeks or maybe a month or so before the test - you have plenty of time. :)

Any scientific calculator should do fine -- I wouldn't use the extra-cheapy ones because they don't always follow order of operations, but there's a TI that's very reasonable... the TI-30X-IIS. Staples has it for $16. I like it because it has a two-line display, so the kid can see what he typed if the answer seems "off"

Good point! Thank you for the advice!
