zaichiki
Speaking of biology resouces for the logic stage... Does anyone have suggestions for resouces for a a DNA/Genetics study? We've got The Usborne Introduction to Genes and DNA and The Science of Jurassic Park. Both have been gobbled up and we're ready to go deeper. Thanks! Chris in VA
Have you extracted DNA from split peas yet? Fun, fun.
FaithManor
There are kits available (try homesciencetools.com) for extracting DNA from oinions. There is also a kit for precipitating DNA from cheek cells. I don't know of any curriculums for children in the lower grades. Faith
Matryoshka
You don't need a kit to extract DNA from anything - it's super-duper easy, and everything you need is easily available from the drug store. Last year we did both strawberries and bananas. The strawberries were more impressive. This is a great video that walks you through it. zaichiki
I'll make sure we look at DNA from a variety of things. Thanks for the video link! We like the hands-on stuff, but ds is a big reader, too, and would be happy to have more to read on his own. We don't want workbooky-stuff. I found a link to Cold Spring Harbor's DNA Lab: I had totally forgotten about them. We used to live near there and had visited a LONG time ago. If we can manage it we'll have to go back for sure! Here's the link in case anyone is interested: http://www.dnalc.org/resources/ This should give ds a lot to study. What sort of curriculum resources are out there for older grades? A pp mentioned not knowing about lower grades. Thanks again!
