ApronMama
We are Little House lovers at our house--my ds7 who is an advanced reader keeps going to back to them since kindergarten. Right now Farmer Boy has his attention. I was going to put Caddie Woodlawn in his free reading pile next--any suggestions for a similar pioneer or 19th century historical fiction book with a boy as the main character? He reads 6th grade level, but I like to keep the content pretty tame. Thanks for your suggestions!
angela in ohio
It's not quite the same, but what about Carry On, Mr. Bowditch? Also, you might check out the Gary Paulsen books. My ds liked Farmer Boy, and he is enjoying some of Paulsen's books.
Skadi
I really enjoyed Jack London's books when I was that age (White Fang, Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf). Some others he might enjoy: Home: A Journey Through America Heading West: Life with the Pioneers Dandelions Train to Somewhere Nory Ryan's Song The Captain's Dog I hope that helps! abbeyej
He might enjoy some of Meindert deJong's books as well -- like Shadrach and The Wheel on the School... (BTW, these aren't American pioneer stories, but I think you'll find the content similar in its own way.) LibraryLover
These do not meet your proposed criteria, but they are too good to pass up: The Door in the Wall. The Dragonling The Indian in the Cupboard All have excellent boy characters.
