5knights3maidens
One of dh's clients is letting us stay at his beach home for 4 days and nights in May. Can you give me science ideas for the beach and ocean? Isn't there some kind of underwater microscope...not to expensive? Since we can't swim (to cold), I want to make it exciting....ages 14, 10, 4 and 2. Thanks!!!!
Hazelt"nut"
Try to get some books from the library before you go that are related to the ocean/beach..just look through what's listed on amazon..I think a thread a while back on this board talked about an ocean unit. Pack a magnifying lense, some nets to catch things, plenty of baggies to hold things..I can't help much for the older kids. My Nature Journal by Olmstead does have a whole section on the seashore but then you'd want to use the rest of it and I'm not sure if you're into nature study. Have a great time!!!! DB in NJ
Have you seen the Oceanography unit from Christian Cottage? It's a free download at http://www.currclick.com (formerly homeschoolestore.com). http://www.currclick.com/product_info.php?products_id=243&it=1 Personally, when we go down the shore, all I take with me is a chair, a good book, a shovel, a bucket, a towel, and the kids ;)

mcconnellboys
What kind of seashore, sand or stone? Shells? Gulf or Atlantic, etc.? Tide pools? You can make a water viewer using just plastic wrap stretched over a piece of plastic tubing, etc. They also make water scopes that are plastic with lenses that are sometimes magnifying.
