Rebecca in VA
Does anyone know of a curriculum (or even a class or two) for middle-schoolers that's interactive? My fifth-grade daughter is currently taking two interactive ancient history classes (four-week ones -- one on Augustus Caesar and one on Archeology), and she's so happy! She loves knowing that the class is being held in "real time" and seeing input from the other students. I know this type of thing is available for high-schoolers, and certainly for college students, but what about middle school?
Carol in Cal.
It is a coached writing class that is offered periodically by the Writer's Jungle people. It is not long enough to be a full year writing class, but it is a good kick start to taking independent work up a notch.
sandra in va
Two options I'll throw out there for you... Potter's School http://www.pottersschool.com/ Veritas Press Scholars' Online http://resources.veritaspress.com/Scholars_Online/Scholars_Online_Main.html Glad your daughter has found something that works well for her and that she enjoys. We haven't tried any online classes yet. Hope you find a good fit for her,
Mostlyamom
My son is taking a middle school science class with ScholarsOnline (not the Veritas one) and is having a great experience. It is quite challenging for him. I love the incorporation of website reading, and the necessity of deciding how much and what to read and study, as paring down the vast body of information available to us is such an essential skill. It includes a chat session, tests, homework questions to submit. It has been taught by a good teacher, too. Hope this helps! kimmyandgracie
Great Books Academy has Socratic Seminars online for grades 3-8. They meet for 1 hour biweekly and are also done in real time. I don't think they could count for an entire class, but they might be a good supplement. I haven't used them yet as dd is only 4, but I am seriously considering them for her when she is old enough. HTH!
