blessedx5
Will the inexpensive ones stream netflix ok? What do I look for in one? Our Mac won't handle it :( Debbie
littlebug42
We just bought a Compaq laptop at Best Buy for me that only cost $300. It streams Netflix very well.

blessedx5
thanks...I actually don't have a port on my mac to run it to my TV...which is what I want to do.... also I assumed my MAC wouldn't stream well though because I do have trouble watching video on my MAC, it tends to be really choppy... Samiam
What operating system do you have on your Mac? I am assuming it is an older one, due to the problems you are experiencing? We run Netflix, DVD, and Cable into our Mac and never an issue, no diff between this and TV.
parias1126
So you are needing a laptop with the HDMI output? You would then need to buy a more expensive laptop. The cheap ones don't usually have that port. You can buy just about any laptop though if you were willing to stream it directly from the Netflix site onto your computer screen. Remudamom
I've got a Dell laptop, cheap that works fine with netflix.

Debbie Have you considered purchasing a Roku box to stream Netflix directly to your tv? We have one and it works well. Again, I'm assuming you have fast enough internet (dsl or cable). http://www.roku.com/netflixplayer/ Also, many newer dvd-players have the option of streaming Netflix too. http://www.walmart.com/ip/LG-BD550-Blu-ray-Player/13912185?sourceid=1500000000000003142050&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=13912185
parias1126
Well if you just need a device to stream Netflix and thought a laptop was your only option, there are actually a lot of options. The Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, many blu-ray players, a laptop, iPad, and a few others.

nmoira
If you want something just to stream Netflix, you're better off purchasing a Roku.
Mekanamom
The new Apple TV is only $99 and will stream Netflix. It can also stream content from your Mac that you may have in iTunes. http://www.apple.com/appletv/ Edited to add: It has an HDMI port to connect to your TV, AND you can sling content from an iOS device such as an iPhone, iPod, or iPad as well as content from your Mac. I'm just dying to try this out. LOL! Edited September 12, 2010 by Mekanamom More info
Kim in Appalachia
You can buy a Roku device for $60, a lot cheaper than buying a new laptop just to stream movies.

If the OP tries to hook up her Mac/PC to the TV, the issue with stereo sound is horrible. Try the other options.
jplain
If your Mac can't stream Netflix smoothly, check your internet speed before doing anything else. It may be that no computer will be able to stream it smoothly, because the data isn't being delivered fast enough. The fix for this would be to upgrade your internet service. We have DSL internet and a landline phone, and when I called and asked to upgrade the speed of our internet service, the combined phone/internet bill actually dropped $5 per month. Wish I'd done it sooner! :D Regarding sound, when we hook our cheap laptop up to the PC via the HDMI port, we also plug in portable speakers (here's a link to ours). We get great sound. MeaganS
I have one of the cheapest laptops there is (under $400, bought a few weeks ago) and it streams Netflix just fine.
