Week One Highlights (long)

If you have recently started school, how is it going? Have you made any changes in curricula or schedule that have gone really well? We've made a few changes for the 2010-11 school year and I'm happy with how they've gone so far. Here are some of the biggest successes:

1. We are using Elemental Science this year. The best part of the week was making homemade sorbet (instead of ice cream, because of allergies) following the instructions in Fizz, Bubble, Flash. The result was a sweet and sour lemon slurry.

2. For the first time with SOTW3 we are using the AG. Why didn't you tell me it has 400 pages?? Not that I didn't have lots of fun scouring the Web for SOTW1 and 2 activities ...

3. My children like to eat. And while they're eating, they want to know when they are going to eat next. So now we start every school day with a snack. By 10:45 they've been up for a while and had breakfast. So I give them something really wonderful and yummy that Mommy normally doesn't buy (today--Pop Tarts), and then we're not supposed to talk about food again until the next snack. They all enjoy fruit and eat it a few times a day and have healthy breakfasts like oatmeal, so I don't feel too too guilty about giving them this kind of treat. There's another snack at 1, then lunch is at 1:45. (I know it's late, but that's how we do.:D)

4. I work from home and usually sit next to the kids with my laptop or have them come to my room with questions. This year, I'm trying to devote work time to work and school time to school. School seems to move faster when I'm both physically and mentally present, and I'm managing to keep up with work, too. We will add extracurriculars in the next weeks, but so far so good!

5. Like last year, we all have Bible, history, and science at the same. But the children are separated for other subjects so that 1) they don't distract each other with goofy looks and giggles and 2) I can help with Mommy-intensive activities like math while others work independently. While DS8 is doing FLL3, for example, DS6 is reading. Then DD6 has FLL1 while DS8 works on cursive.

So, we're off to a good start. I hope you are, too!

Our first week went pretty well overall.

My kids are getting older and more independent. So I had a bit more time to do other things through-out the day. I was thinking that perhaps I should think of keeping my house clean as a hobby (:tongue_smilie:) so I would want to do it a bit more!

We are also getting up much earlier and therefore finishing earlier. It's been hard for all of us, but its nice to get done and have free time.

I've blogged in a little more detail, if anyone wants to take a peek.
