Discussion about profit at the library.......

Recommended Posts

I've never been hassled about doing my school (which included additonal students for which I got paid) at a library, but I knew I could be.

However, it does bring up some interesting points. If you are not allowed to have an event or meeting that is about profit, what about:

A realtor using the computers?

A person executing a job search?

Business partners researching a marketing plan?

Somebody selling on ebay?

How should/does a library monitor what everyone is doing there? How can they tell, without being inappropriate, intrusive or violating something, know if it is an insurance agent/client or friends from church?

I think that the difference with these is that the person can be alone at a computer while doing these. Our library also has nternet limits of 15 and 30 minutes depending on the computer. That seriously limits how much selling and such you are doing.

Tutors, teachers, and groups on the other hand can be loud and unpredictable if they have not reserved space. They may be causing more wear and tear and ultimately more cost to the library.

I don't know--I was fascinated at the poster's experience in the other thread, as here our HS group has weekly co-op meetings in one of the library branches, and the librarians love us! Some of the teachers do get paid, but I don't know if that would even matter. OTOH, the library is across the street from the public elementary school, so the librarians are effectively acting as unpaid babysitters from 2:30 to 5ish. I don't think they have time to worry about what we do in class. ;)

I think it is different if you are having someone meet you at the library for a profitable exchange. The 'purchaser' may think of the library as a host of the exchange. Maybe even that the library has approved the transaction. This may create a false sense of security on the purchasers part. You are a legit person.

But what about someone holding a meeting selling phony investments? The purchasers may feel that the seller has more credence since they have been 'allowed' to hold this sale in a public building. If this person is bilked, they may feel that the library is somehow liable for the exchange.

I can also see that someone may feel that the library is liable if there was a physical injury to a person.

Someone who is doing research or buying/selling on a computer isn't using the library in this manner.

How did they know the child you were schooling wasn't your son/daughter? It seems like there shouldn't be much difference between someone schooling 6 of their own kids and 6 of other peoples' kids at the library. It's hard for me to fathom a librarian ignoring kids looking at porn but having a problem with kids studying with a tutor (if they're not being disruptive).

If it's a problem, maybe you could get a study room and connect to the internet on your laptop (if you have one)?
