ISO: Sloppy joes recipe without ketchup, chili sauce, etc.

Recommended Posts

I did a quick search and this is the first thing thing that came up:

http://andrecipes.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/sloppy-joes-with-no-ketchup/

I'd have to imagine that it's pretty simple to omit the ketchup and add a touch more sugar and vinegar to any standard recipe. I mean, all ketchup is really is tomato, sugar, and vinegar!

If you want to keep looking, I googled this term:

all natural sloppy joe recipe with "no ketchup"

Good luck! Mt best friend makes the best sloppy joes and my kids will not touch them. It makes me so sad, because DH and I adore them

ETA: Oh, here's another:

1 pound ground meat

1 15 oz can tomato puree

1 small onion, chopped fine

I small bell pepper, green or red, chopped fine

1T Worcestershire sauce

1t garlic powder

1/2 t pepper

2T molasses

1T cider vinegar

dash of salt

dash of dry mustard

dash of cayenne *or* paprika (not both!)

Brown the meat. When it's about half done, add the dry spices. When it's all browned, add the onion and the bell pepper. Toss for a bit, then add liquids (molasses, Worcestershire, vinegar). Simmer for a couple of minutes, then add the tomato puree. Simmer for about 10 minutes, until the sauce has thickened nicely.

I would like to just use tomato paste or sauce. I am trying to keep this cheap.

Thanks!

I don't use katsup etc. in my sloppy joes. I usually just adapt the recipe, and add more veggies.

Sometimes I use salsa, if it's on sale. Ingredients might look like this depending on what I have in the house:

1 lb burger

15 oz can diced tomatoes (I like fire roasted) &/or tomato paste, sauce, etc.

Veggies cut fine or shredded- mix & match, about 3 cups:

green peppers

onions

carrots

zucchini

Jalapenos

canned diced peppers

mushrooms

spices- I either stick with an Italian or Mexican theme:

cayenne pepper

chili powder

cumin

garlic

basil

oregano
