praisefor3
They were reading the Little House series and doing well but want to take a break from those. I can't think of any other chapter series like these that would be appropriate. What am I forgetting?
cjthedog64
My 4 yr old son is loving the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Lots of fantasy!
aggieamy
My 4 yr old son is loving the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Lots of fantasy! We recently read his Queen Zixi of Ix book and loved it. I think DH actually enjoyed it the most! Great book though. Everything by Roald Dahl is just fantastic and perfect for that age.
Farrar
There are lots of options. These are just a few things we read since my kids have been 5... My Father's Dragon series The Jamie and Angus Stories Roald Dahl EB White The Twenty One Balloons Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series Mr. Popper's Penguins series Kate DiCamillo Cornelia Funke My kids also like series books like Judy Moody, Stink, Ivy and Bean, Nate the Great... They're nice because unlike a longer read aloud they take just 2-3 nights to finish and are a nice way to take a break after a longer book that can take a week or two. Stacia
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a lovely book. And, they're not chapter books, but Demi has many beautiful picture books that are retellings of folktales from around the world. They are delightful. Three Tales of My Father's Dragon Beverly Cleary books? (Henry Huggins series; The Mouse and the Motorcycle series; Ramona series; Socks; etc...) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory You might want to check The Read-Aloud Handbook (your library probably has a copy) for lots of great ideas. Heatherwith4
Here's what we've read so far this year: Charlotte's Web Stuart Little Sarah, Plain and Tall All three books have gone over quite well.
Chris in VA
Betsy-Tacy and Milly,Molly,Mandy are perfect for that age. Just the first of the BT's. I'd save Cornelia Funke for a while--great books but much more sophisticated vocab/plot.
