TXMary2
I am super excited about school with my First Grader this year. Here's what we are doing:  OPGTR- continuing on...  FLL 1  ETC- continuing Book 1 and getting through Book 2 by next summer Abeka 1 Math- we just finished Saxon Math 1 during Kindergarten and will be doing Abeka until 3rd or 4th when we do Teaching Textbooks  Bible- Rod & Staff Bible Stories book, memory verses, verse copywork  Tapestry of Grace- American History, Geography, Literature, Writing and Art. Super excited to start this! For the American History I am also using History Pockets and the "If You Lived.." series from Scholastic.  Science- Elemental Science Biology- also super excited about this. We don't start using Apologia Elementary until 4th grade so finding this was a mental life saver!! I did not want to to SL Science or WP Science again.  We will start our day with the pledge (memory work), calendar, weather, days of school chart and recitations (full name, address, phone, family phone #'s, months). Then we will do our bible story and devotional. After that we will just work from our list and get done what time allows. Ideally we will make it through all our plans each day, but realistically life happens AND I am doing TOG with a D/R student that will take a lot of time. All in all I am very excited to get started - we start Monday!  How about you? What are you doing with your First Grader this year?
Lisa in the UP of MI
We start on Monday, too. We'll be doing:  Oak Meadow First Grade  Singapore PM 1A & 1B  All About Spelling 2  Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding  Song School Latin  La Clase Divertida 1  various resources for faith formation
Mom2J112903
J knows his addy, phone number, b-day, days of the week, months, so we don't do any of that. He also knows the pledge already :) I need to get a flag so he can keep doing it as he learned it from being in Catholic school for 2yrs.  We are learning some Catholic prayers, so that is his memory work.  We use ZB for handwritting and spelling.  MUS Alpha (haven't started yet, we switched from Saxon 1 and will start after his tonsilectomy and short vacation) but we are playing math games to cement facts currently :)  I have Shurley English 1 on its way for vocab and grammar.  He is learning Spanish and ASL per his requests.  Science is R.E.A.L Earth and Space  SOTW for history-although not really liking it.  We do have Saxon Phonics but since J is reading fairly well we just do the lessons he is not familiar with. This morning we reviewed all of the /k/ rules. Which in Saxon Phonics1 was lesson 54.  We read Level1 readers instead of the Saxon readers. He *much* prefers this.  He will also be taking tennis lessons (per his request) and already we play as often as we can.  We do piano and recorder as well, when we can. Nothing too formal due to our already full schedule. He has OT twice a week for SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) and fine/gross motor delays.  Needless to say, we are pooped by the end of the day! Do your children work through subjects quickly (say, 15 minutes for math?). Do you school on the weekends?[/quote']We school year-round, though we left out a few subjects for the summer. So we're still short a subject or two (I've been adding them back in since the beginning of August), but we only take about 2 hours total, if I don't count reading. We've already finished OPG, and DD's a strong reader who doesn't need to be coerced to read, so take that into account. I'll try to guesstimate our times and frequency below. Â Singapore Math (daily; this is our longest subject at prob 30-40 min) Â Writing With Ease (daily; 10-15 min) Growing with Grammar (alternates with spelling; 2x per week, 10-15 min) Spelling Workout (alternates with grammar; 2x per week, 10-15 min) Â Elemental Science Biology (2x per week; about 30 min) Â Story of the World 1 (2x per week; about 30 min) Â Horizons Health (haven't added this yet; probably 1x per week) Â Artistic Pursuits (1x per week; okay, this is longer, but we all enjoy it and don't time it) Â Music appreciation (formally 1x per week; 10 min) Piano lessons (1x per week) Â Phys. Ed. (1x per week plus extracurricular 1x per week) Â We did Song School Latin last year, so we're reviewing it right now. We'll probably do something in Latin, because she enjoys it and enjoys grammar, but I'm dragging my feet on officially starting something. We're also starting Spanish, and I'd rather focus on that. I think we'll be doing that daily, but only for about 15 minutes to start. Â Finally, we also do memory work where we review daily. We add something short 1x per week and something longer 1-2x per month, depending on mastery. Altogether, this probably takes us less than 10 min. Â So I'd say my 2 hour estimate is about right. We almost always finish up everything before lunch, and that includes a 30-45 minute break for me to do some work. We also tend to start pretty late, like 8:30 or so. HTH! :001_smile:

It is approximately 2 hours per day. We wake up at about 6:30 - 7:00 and start lessons around 7:30 and are usually done by about 10:30 or 11:00. Actual lessons only take up about 2 hours of that time as some lessons are only done once a week, etc. We take breaks to play outside, read books for fun, play educational computer games (see above), etc. The rest of the day is open with soccer twice a week, piano lessons once a week and piano practice for 30 minutes in the afternoon every day. If we want or need a day off, we take it...no problem. I think it's a bit easier for us since we have an only child and my husband and I both share the homeschooling responsibilities. I also recruit family members to come in and do lessons once in awhile. Grammy loves art, so she will come about once a month and do an art lesson and cooking lesson with him. We have an Aunt who is into genealogy so she is coming to do a couple of lessons with him about his family history. My husband has a friend who is very knowledgeable about outdoors and nature and he stops by a couple of times per month to spend time outside with husband and son on our property learning about the local plants and animals, etc. I'm working on some other family members to come over now and then to share learning time with him as well. I noticed you are doing FLL 2x/wk. It is suggested to be done 3x/wk to be done in a typical school year. Do you do more than one lesson at a time? I think part of the problem is my curriculum and that I want a summer break! There are 170 lessons in our math program, so we have to do it 5x/wk. So no MEP or SM CWP. Our history program is 110 lessons so it has to be done 3x/wk to be completed in a school year (I would rather do it 1x/wk).  Sorry for the thread hijack, ya'll! Satori
We started FLL this spring and it was too slow, so we started doing several lessons in one day. Usually 2-4 lessons at once. We're finishing up FLL 1 now and starting FLL2 this fall, and I would like to do just 1-2 lessons per day. I'm trying to stretch it out to last our 2010/2011 year, at least through spring, possibly summer. Working on this now in fact. After that, we may start MCT next fall. Â Normally I don't pay any attention to how many weeks/lessons a program has, we just do it at our own pace, which may be accelerated in some subjects. Â Thank you for attaching your schedule! Aloha2U
We'll be starting at the end of the month and I can hardly believe it's already that time of year again. I've had our 1st grade year pretty well planned out since the spring (with a few recent modifications), but lately I've been prepping to tutor my little man's class in our new Classical Conversations community (starts mid-September). This has left me feeling a bit on the unprepared side of things, discombobulated if you will, but then I read Daisy's blog post and just had to say... Amen!!! Â Anyways, our 1st grade lineup is in my signature and our schedules are posted on our homeschool blog (if anyone's interested). I truly hope everyone has a great school year! I'm looking forward to reading all about them. Â :001_smile: Melissa
Food4Thought
We're starting our 4-day weeks next Tuesday. Here's what I'm using:  Math Math Mammoth 1 RS Math Games  Language Arts Daily Language Review Finishing last 11 weeks of a word wall program we started last year Hooked on Spelling Copywork for handwriting  History: Usborne Ancient World (spine) + library books  Science: Library books covering taxonomy/anatomy/botany  Art: 36 different projects from artprojectsforkids.org (all filed away! :D)  Plus miscellaneous memory work, read-alouds, games like bananagrams, Uno, etc. Our mornings will be an hour of sit down work (math, LA), then another hour of reading for history or science (alternating days). Then games until lunch time. It has become habit to read 3 books (or chapters) each night at bed, so there's another hour of read-alouds at bedtime. It's about 3-4 hours a day, but 75% of it feels like playing. ;)

AnneGabe
We started our first grade year 3 months ago. I like almost everything we're doing but I'm going to be changing our math curriculum ASAP.  Math - Horizons (will be switching to Math Mammoth)  Spelling - All About Spelling  History - Beautiful Feet Early American History  Geography - Putting together myself to go along with our American history.  Language - First Language Lessons  Handwriting - Handwriting Without Tears  Science - Sonlight Science K  We absolutely love All About Spelling, Beautiful Feet, and Handwriting Without Tears.  First Language Lessons was painfully slow at first. I went through the entire book and marked things and took notes and edited a lot of the lessons down and now we're liking it. I don't think I'll use it next year, though.  Horizons is super fun for me and my youngest daughter (starting K this fall) but absolutely terrible for my 1st grade daughter. She can't focus at all when doing the worksheets since there are so many concepts on each page. So we're more than likely going to go with Math Mammoth which looks perfect for her.  I'm starting to look for some extra science to add, too. My daughter surprisingly loves science and more experiments and visuals would be nice.  And I might add even more geography. That's one of her favorite subjects and even though we do a lot that I've put together on my own I know she'd love to do even more!

Guest mrsjamiesouth
We are on week3 of 1st grade. Here is what we ended up with: CLE Math1 LTR FLL- MWF LHFHG (using Bible, history, Story and Science portions) LBC Grade1 (art, music, poetry, Aesop, and Geo) Elemental Science- T/TH Song School Latin- MWF French (I made up my own using CDs and worksheets off of Enchanted Learning) - T/Th  Our year for 1st grade has been so much fun so far! This morning after math we made snowflakes. We read about clouds, and then in the afternoon layed outside and watched them. Song School is so much fun, I love it! I find myself singing it at odd times (Salve Salve, time to go, time to go Salve, its the end of the day and it's time to say, Salve Salve time to go)
