at the beach
Rod and Staff? We've used it and it is simple and straightforward. If you have not used it before, I would get at least a grade level behind. It doesn't cover spelling but Rod and Staff has spelling, too. ETA: What we will be doing this year: I plan to have my 8th grader use a workbook format (we are starting after Labor Day with everything except our online classes that start earlier), probably CHC's materials and if we don't like that, we'll try Seton or Voyages in English (which I think would be similar in style to Rod and Staff). I am wanting our materials to include a Catholic component or I would go with Rod and Staff 7 this year. Composition is included in her online Humanities course. mdhomeschool
We did an online class through Keystone for 8th grade English, but if we hadn't, we would have done Lightning Literature, Rod & Staff 8 for grammar, and Vocabulary from the Classical Roots. My current 8th grader is doing LLATL, R&S grammar 2x week, and Vocab from Classical Roots. Plus, of course, plenty of reading and writing summaries of assigned literature. mazakaal
Not sure if you'd call this simple, but my plans for LA for 7th are Analytical Grammar, Vocab from Classical Roots, Lightning Lit 7, IEW Ancient History Based Writing. We used AG and IEW in 6th and I was very happy with them. You could use these for 8th as well and just go with LL 8 and whichever IEW fits your history cycle. Hope that gives you a few ideas to throw around.
mereminerals
My 8th grader is currently using Progeny Press Study Guides for the Lord of the Ring Trilogy to cover literature, spelling and vocabulary; English from the Roots Up; Easy Grammar; and we are beta testing a new WriteShop with my 4th grader and he is sitting in on those as well. Laura W.
My 7th grader is using Total Language Plus. It's simple in the sense that it's an all-in-one program, and the guides are nicely laid out and easy to break into daily assignments. Blessings, Laura
