Anyone have battery back up power in their home?

DH brought home 85 batteries from his work. He claims they're good for 5 years. I'm real nervous about having 85 battiers in our garage. He just scolded my son because a metal baseball bat was lying across one of the batteries.

 

Are they really worth the effort? I can only invision our house going up in flames. We have zero room to get around this thing in our garage. Can't park the car in the garage, either. All of this in case we need a couple of hours of power during an outage???????? Not feeling very 'green' today
