Snickerdoodle
Old dog, new tricks and all that... :001_huh: When I save something it saves it to the downloads folder. How do I get it into the folders I want? Urgh!
BikeBookBread
Open the target folder, and then open the downloads folder. Drag item from downloads into the target destination folder.
Snickerdoodle
You mean through the finder? I can't figure out how to have two things open through the same time. If I open the finder it just opens one thing through the stacks.
BikeBookBread
Do you have sub-folders set up in your stacks? For example, I have a sub folder called "Bread Recipes". I would open the "Bread Recipes" folder so that it remains open on the desktop. I would then open the downloads folder, click on the item and drag it right over into the Bread Recipes folder. Hannah C.
In your web browser, find the Preferences. I'm using Firefox on a Mac right now, and "Preferences" is under the Firefox tab. Then look through it until you see something about downloads. In Firefox, it's in the "Main" part of the preferences, under the second section: Downloads. There are two options you can pick from. One is "Save files to" with a file location and a button that says "Choose" after it. Mine looks like this: "Save file to [box] /User/[username]/Downloads [end box] Choose... The other option is "Always ask me where to save downloads." If you select this, the web browser will ask you where to save any file you download. So you can have one file save to one subfolder, and put other more general ones just on the desktop. If you click on the "Choose" button, you will be given what looks kind of like a Finder window, and you can select your desktop. That will make all downloaded files save to your desktop. From there you can usually click and drag them into the right folders pretty easily. I hope that helps!
Karenciavo
You either have to move the file which is very easy or you can change where you files download to by going to preferences in your browser. Is there one other particular place you want them to go?
Snickerdoodle
I would open the "Bread Recipes" folder so that it remains open on the desktop. Ok, I think this is the part I'm not getting. :o
Snickerdoodle
Ok. It can't be this difficult. THat's how I know I'm not doing it right. I managed to create a new untitled folder. It has my new file in it. Now I want to move it to the Latin folder inside of my Homeschooling folder. What is wrong with me? HOw do I rename this folder? How do I move it? If I open the finder it just opens one thing through the stacks. With a Finder window active/selected (it will say "Finder in the top left corner of the screen), select File > New Finder Window at the top of the screen. You can also press Command and N simultaneously (command is the button between Option and the space bar).
BikeBookBread
Ok, I think this is the part I'm not getting. :o Have you created any sub folders in your documents folder? Instead, click anywhere on the desktop to activate "Finder". Go to "File", "New Finder Window" or "New Folder" to create a folder as it sounds like you need to create a system of folders. Then, when you click on the Document/stacks your new folder, "Snickerdoodle's Stuff" :) should appear, and you can drag your download into that folder. You can also press Command and N simultaneously (command is the button between Option and the space bar). Ok, I dragged the Latin folder to the desktop from the finder and then dragged the untitled folder into it. THen I popped the Latin folder back into the right place in the finder. Too convoluted. I need to try your way...
Mom22ns
With a Finder window active/selected (it will say "Finder in the top left corner of the screen), select File > New Finder Window at the top of the screen. You can also press Command and N simultaneously (command is the button between Option and the space bar). This is it exactly. Open as new finder window as directed above. In one of the windows make sure you are viewing the downloads folder, in the other, your destination, then just drag it from one to the other. If you are viewing as columns, you may be able to see your destination without doing this, but this is a guaranteed method that will get you there every time. I am still thinking in terms of Maps in PC. I imagine the system would work similarly. Let me try Moira's way.

Ellie
Ok. It can't be this difficult. I know, right? What with Macs being so intuitive and all that.
radiobrain
well, I suspect it is just because you are new to it. Creating new folders, titling them, retitling and shoving them all into the right place is pretty simple. Drag and drop. Click and type. Bang a gong. :D FWIW, we have always been a mac family (I still have my first b&w one somewhere in the basement) and I couldn't use a PC... I still have trouble, but I am computerly challenged.
