Chris in VA
Dh and I just spent a week in a lovely apt in California, courtesy of friends of friends. It was wonderful, wonderful! The bed was the best--the kind of mattress that would help the Princess from Princess and the Pea get a great nice sleep! I think the sheet pockets were 16 inches, and we actually timed how long it took for our heads to sink into the pillows...ok, not really:D. Anyway, on top of that great, poofy mattress was an enormous down comforter. I swear it was about a foot tall, if you know what I mean. So what do I call such an enormous (but surprisingly light) comforter, so I can find one like it? Or is it just...an enormous down comforter? Parrothead
I do believe the proper name is "high-end enormous down comforter."
Medieval Mom
Duvet :)
hornblower
It's a feather bed if you sleep on it (it's like a mattress topper). It's a duvet if you sleep under it.
Chris in VA
Thank you! It's not a feather bed, but I thought the duvet was the cover over the comforter. Learn something new every day! lol
ThatCyndiGirl
We have one like that. It is hardly ever actually ON the bed b/c I want to keep it nice. (Do I sound like an 87 year old lady or what?!) During the winter our master bedroom gets cooooold! So I pile on: Top Sheet Blanket Electric Blanket Wonderful king size wool blanket we bought while in the mountains in Panama (love that blanket!) Old Cozy comforter (I bought it on clearance for $17 at K-Mart 13 years ago and still love it! It's my go-to comforter. I plan to never let it go, along with the wool one mentioned above.) New Comforter The stack is so high that to watch TV I had to peek up and over the whole shebang. I finally gave up on the TV.

Ali in OR
Try to find Scandinavian ones. My parents got one when they went to Norway. We always called them what sounds like "doona" but I think is spelled duni, and I think that's Norwegian. Later they got them for us kids and the quality was superb. My kids have cheap American versions and the little feathers leak out all the time--not the same thing at all!

I thought we were the only ones and it was some Americanization of a Norwegian word my mom made up (I do love my mom and typically don't question her!). Teachin'Mine
What is the proper name of a really huge comforter? Blankey? No. Not proper enough ... Mr. Blankey?
gingersmom
I call it a really huge comforter. The more money you spend the nicer they are. I buy mine at The Company Store.
MariannNOVA
Eiderdown? Connoisseurs of comfort know there is nothing in the world quite like an Eiderdown comforter. It is the king of all downs. This very rare down is hand harvested from the empty nests of the eider duck. It is incredibly soft and due to its powerful thermal properties, very little is required to keep you toasty warm in winter and cool and comfortable in summer. This very rare, exquisite super luxury down is the ultimate heirloom that will last a lifetime while delivering sublime comfort.

Actually, in Norsk (Norwegian) it is "dyne", which sounds like something in between Deena and Duunah. My dh is from Norge :) We had ours for years before we knew to look for "duvets" in the store :) Excellent duvets are available on both sides of the pond, and are usually less expensive here. Look for down, and a very high thread count in the fabric. Also, remember to either hang them out in the frozen cold or toss in the dryer several times per year. Expect to replace them every so often, too, as the feathers break down. Enjoy! Edited August 11, 2010 by Medieval Mom
Chris in VA
Thanks! Off to google. I'm cleaning my bedroom today--it's a huge job, and I'm embarrassed I've let it get in this condition. Nothing like the prospect of extreme comfort to motivate me.:D
