Hi!

I'm new here but am in my 4th year of homeschooling (how did that happen?). I'm a mom of soon to be 6. Going into this year I will have a 2nd/3rd grader, a 1st grader and a K'er plus the 3 little ones.

Up until this year we have used A beka exclusively, but decided we wanted to make a change. I'm struggling in the area of LA for my 1st grader and K'er, though. A beka provided such a great foundation for reading for my kids, but we've found it a little to intensive and worksheet oriented. So this year we decided to switch to LLATL. I'm loving what I'm seeing for my oldest daugther, but with the younger ones, it seems so between grade levels, if that makes any sense. With my 1st grader, I'll be using LLATL's red book and am slightly concerned about some of the sightwords, etc... but I'm going to move forward and see how it goes. With my K'er, I don't feel he's ready to start the LLATL blue book (it seems a little advanced for K but also seemed to be a little behind where my daughter who had just finished A beka's K is) so I decided to start out with A beka Language Arts for him. I do like the LLATL program though and would like to transition over to it when he's ready. Has anyone done this? I'm just not sure at what point or how to make a switch or if I should just attempt to use the 2 curriculi simultaneously. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

Not sure what LLATL is but I agree - Abeka is too wksht-focused for us as well. My kids were readers WELL before they could even write their names! We use Ordinary Parents' Guide to Teaching Reading - NO worksheets, VERY thorough, starts from the beginning (A says "a") and goes until the end (4th grade - multi-syllabic words) - no need to buy multiple programs (one book only). I'm sure you didn't want another suggestion but... sorry :)

My dd did an early phonics program, Abeka Language 1 and then went to LLATL Red. She was reading well by this stage so the transition was easy. We are using the old spiral bound edition without accompanying workbook - she just does the work in a notebook. I will transition her to the current workbook-style edition when she moves into the Yellow book and can work more independently.

I have five dc using LLATL. It's a great program. :)

Thanks, Katy! I may end up looking into it...love the idea of one book!

LLATL is Learning Language Arts Through Literature and I really like the look and feel of the program, I just am having a hard time figuring out how to use their levels. It seems the blue book, their lowest level which they say is for 1st grade is more K/1st; the red book (2nd grade) is really more 1st/2nd. So how do you integrate into it? I just can't see starting my K'er out learning 4 letters and blending them into words and 2 sightwords in the 3rd week of K with their blue book. At the same time, that seems too simple for my 1st grader. Just trying to figure it all out!! :)

Linda,

It sounds like you did what I'm doing with my 1st grader. She'll start the red book this year after having completed A beka's K program. Hoping it works well!

It's just the little guy's curriculum, I'm trying to work through in my head!
