lisamarie
How long would you give a program before determining that it's just not working for your child? I started MP-K with my DD back in April and we got through 7 weeks. We've started it back up last week and I've had my doubts, and today DD pretty much confirmed that it's not a good fit. She said "I liked our old school that we used to do." We did MFW-K last year. It involved cutting and pasting, worksheets, foam letters and letter flashcards. I think MP-K is just not the right fit but it's hard to kiss a $200 investment goodbye without being absolutely sure.
coffeefreak
It sounds like you have your answer. You gave it a good try and neither of you are enjoying it. Don't waste any more of your time :) When my kids were younger and that would happen, I would put the curriculum up for sale, and once it sold, I would purchase the one we really wanted. This time of year, you might find a good deal on MFW Adventures on one of the used curriculum sites. Blessings! Dorinda
Momma H
I always tell people who are just starting out to expect to "waste" some money. The whole thing is such an unknown at first so it is hard to buy the right things the first time. This, unfortunatley, is part of the deal. It is a process and there is a learning curve. Hopefully it won't happen a lot! :tongue_smilie:
Closeacademy
The first few years before you figure out your teaching style and what works for your dd will be a time of some wasted money until you figure it out. If MFW works for her then you may want to think about going back to it.:001_smile:
johnandtinagilbert
I usually give it 3 months then observe for retention. If it's not working at that point, we give it the boot.
savoybrwn
I also give it about 3 mths. After spending the money, I really hate to waste it, but I do love the suggestion of trying to sell now while it's still early and getting the program you know works. I remember suffering through some really awful fits and waiting the following year to make the change. Would not do so now! Good luck,
....
Can you come up with your own curriculum and include these things that your daughter likes? There are so many resources online. I have all the topics for the state standards to go with each grade level. I come up with worksheets/reading/etc based on the state guidelines - in addition to our regularly-scheduled program...:tongue_smilie: Did you consider starting MFW 1st grade? HOD? (I don't have any experience with that one, but I know it's popular) Five-in-a-Row?? It also sounds like your daughter might like Oak Meadow 1st Grade... I really wish I could be more help. Don't give up. There's something out there that will click with her.
