Mom2J112903
Yep, J is sick *again* :glare: Yesterday he started complaining of a sore throat, *very* low grade fever. We went about our normal day for the most part. This morning he woke with a temp right over 101. Wasn't acting right, so went ahead and did the Motrin. We *never* treat for a 101 temp, unless J is acting "off", which he was. Complained of a sore throat as well, but has been eating just fine. He lays down at 1p for his normal rest/nap time. The child is sawing logs by ten after. Wakes up around 315p and I *knew* something was very wrong. The child is white as a ghost and can hardly walk-temp 104.2 :scared: Immediatly got the Motrin out and called the pedi. Get to the pedi and the temp is down, thankfully, but still high. Sore throat, headache and "butterflies in my stomach". Also starting to get a crunky nose again :glare: Rapid strep, negative. Pedi's best guess is a virus. Nothing *she* can do but sent us home with a "script" for lots of movies and Momma time over the next few days. :) Background-J spent the *entire* month of June sick. Had sinus infections, beginning stage of bronchitis and viral tonsilitis. He ended up being admited to the hospital for 48hrs with the viral tonsilits, high temp and dehyrdation (which literally he went from perfect to admission in less than 12hrs). By the end of June he had been on 4 different antibioitics, including IV Rocephin. Almost exactly a month ago we were able to get into to a new allergist, whom is also an asthma specialist. He agreed with the pedi's dx of asthma and tweaked his asthma meds. J was also dx with *severe* and multiple enviromental allergies. Needless to say J is on a cocktail of allergy meds and recieves allergy shots twice a week. We have an air-purifier that is set on auto, so when it senses poor air quality, it runs heavier/longer. Well, lets just say, it has been working over-time these past few days. A friend mentioned auto-immune issues, I have no experince with them nor even know what to even research. Yes, we will call the allergist in the morning and see what *they* want to do. I do not even know if J can get his allergy shots this week thanks to the super high temp he had today. Is it too far fetched to think his immune system is not up to the task of allergy shots and we are seeing a weak immune system? Therefore not allowing his immune system to fight anything off? I know the allergist will know where to go, or at least I hope, but I would like to be armed with some of my own information/thoughts. And of course not to look like a crazy woman when I go in there. ANY thoughts/information/links/suggestions are more than greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!!!
Mom2J112903
Insert choice of WTH?! Here.... J spiked to 104.8-only 4hours after a dose of Mortin. WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!?!?!
Jean in Newcastle
I am so sorry that he's sick again. I'm afraid that I don't have too much wisdom to give you. I'm dealing with my own weak immune system. I'm taking elderberry extract in a product called Sambucol.
Rebecca
:grouphug: Just wanted to share that there are viruses going around causing really high fever... My daughter ran a fever of 104.5 for three days two weeks ago. We are in WNC and my nephew ran a fever of close to 105 for three days in Eastern PA(at the beginning of July). I had to (following doctors advise) use motrin and tylenol every three hours in order to control the fever. Follow your momma's gut. Jan in SC
Please be very careful with your air purifier. I cannot use one because most produce ozone and it makes my asthma worse! I hope he gets better soon! :grouphug:
flobee76
I am so sorry your little one is sick again. :grouphug: Sounds like your son's immune system is compromised from having all those antibiotics. Does your family take probioitcs? I would definitely recommend one to replenish all that was destroyed from the antibiotics (those destroy bad AND good bacteria). You should also up his vitamin C. Mom2J112903
Pedi has not called back :glare: He is sweating like a piggy, so the fever is breaking. Tyelnol is like water, so the alternating thing-doesn't work.
Ottakee
Sorry he is sick again. I would seek out a pediatric immunologist or peds. infectious disease specialist to help you figure this out.
Mommyof4ks
Sorry he is sick again. I would seek out a pediatric immunologist or peds. infectious disease specialist to help you figure this out. :iagree: Has he had a regular CBC done or any blood work done? If not ask for that as soon as he gets better, obviously now his blood work would not be useful since he is sick. I would also ask the doc to test his IGG level. I would think if he had an actual immune deficiency that it would have popped up before now, but I am not a doctor so maybe not. If the illnesses came about when he started the allergy shots then I too would assume that they are related. Be prepared to hear that you are crazy, but crazy does not mean wrong. BTDT several times with my kids. I hope you get some answers very soon.
Mom2J112903
J has had three, maybe four, CBS done since early June. None since June 25th however. Yes, it is time for another one. When those were being ran, his Lymphocytes were extremly high and his WBCs extremly low-I could be getting those mixed up though, it has been a long day. He already gets 1000mg of Vit C a day-can't increase it anymore. Probiotics are also given. His last dose of antibiotic was 6wks ago. The nearest immunoligist (minus our allergist/asthma specialist whom also works with the immune system, obviously) is almost 3hrs away. We hope Dr M can do something with him. He is finally asleep but of course I am in there every 5 minutes checking on him. We went to the allergist *because* he was so sick. This is the first time he has been sick since he started the allergy shots-exactly 4wks1 day ago.
Joker
My younger dd has had trouble with asthma and allergies. We have the ped and allergist/asthma doc as well. We didn't find out until she was about five that she had an airway abnormality (that she was born with) on top of her other problems. She went through a period of constant illness and meds and it was actually her ENT specialist who rec'd doing a scope. He said that because of the asthma/allergy problems when you add in the airway problem that she just can't kick colds and such like other kids. We have to be very proactive with different meds if we feel she is getting even the smallest cold symptoms. If you and your allergist feel confident that the meds J's on should be working then I would look into other problems. Hope you figure it out quick for your little guy! Mom2J112903
J has had multiple endoscopes done in the past for GI issues. Wouldn't we have noticed something then? He had his adenoids out right after his 2nd birthday as well. The child has been thru the ringer unfortunatly. Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. I just don't understand what on earth is going on with him.
rootsnwings
Crystal, I see that you are AL, us too! :) There are a LOT of fever viruses going around now--both my littlest one and I had it a few weeks ago--I ended up with strep but I'm almost 100% sure it was a secondary infection. And pollen here this year has been HORRIBLE!!! I've NEVER had to take allergy meds but have been prescribed singulair for the remainder of the year because I was having such a hard time. ETA: I read some statistic that showed the normal range for pollen in AL is around a 15-20 (whatever unit they use to measure)... this year, the charts are showing 2000 in some areas around here!!!!!!! Craziness. I'm sending some prayers your way and hoping your ds gets some relief soon!
Mom2J112903
Yeah, the air purifier has been "angry" or "forgein contaminet" as J says :tongue_smilie: It reminds us of MO on WALL-E, so yep, Mo has been cleaning like a mad man these past few days. This is why I think his immune system is working over time dealing with the allergens and is allowing other things to "invade" his body. He has allergies to mold, pollen, dust, animals, trees, weeds, and grasses. Yeah, he is allergic to his enviroment-literally. It is time for his immune system to be looked at more closely though. I really hope we do not have a hard time getting the allergist to run things. He is a really nice man, whom is on board with homeschooling J and we agree on *so* many things :D It is nice to see another AL momma on here! We travel to B'ham and Hunstville a lot, so if you are near there or will be there, let us know :D
Ottakee
Honestly, at this point it sounds like it would be well worth the 3 hour trip to the specialist, or even somewhere like a Mayo clinic if you can get insurance approval. Thankfully we have most of our specialists within an hour but we do drive 3 hours for the mito guy and we did do the 12-14 hours to Mayo before. On a different side, my sister's son does NAET treatments for his allergies. To me it sounds like "hocus pocus" stuff---I don't understand it at all---BUT he is SOOOOO much healthier and his allergies are greatly lessening so that he is med free now. Mom2J112903
I honestly do not have a problem traveling the 3hrs, we really adore the city that the big hospital is in. We used to travel OVER 3hrs for his pedi GI and this is when we lived in W.Va and had to travel to Columbus, Ohio. We did these trips *often* and it did not matter if there was snow or not-we went. I am not sure if we could get his insurance to cover Mayo or not. Honestly I never thought it would come to this. One our of homeschooling friends went thru the NAET treatment. She swears by it as well. The allergist office will be opening soon and we shall see what he can do. I honestly just want him to draw some blood work and lets go from there. If things come back strange, which I have a feeling they will, then yes, I want a refferal to B'ham and a pedi immunologist. Mom2J112903
Called the allergist office-the doc is not in and will not be in until 930/10a this morning. She said we should refer back to the pedi, but (a) she did not want to do any bloodwork last night (b) I refuse to have my son seen by a pedi when he has sinus and lung junk going on. She says anything over 100 is always refered back to the pedi. With J having such a high temp and being so little, she says to have the pedi do everything. All I want is the Dr M to take a look at him and order some bloodwork. The pedi said a virus but why on earth is his nose getting snotty and he sounded like a seal last night? When you have an allergist/asthma specialist, this is the person whom should be treating those things. I understand he had a high fever, and I also know (and yes, it is in his chart) that he was *so* sick in June. I just want to get to the bottom of this and do not want to wait 3 months or more for an immunologist appt. Sure the pedi *could* draw the blood work, but they don't know what to do with it! I need someone whom is trained in the immune system, such as Dr M, or yes, even better a pedi immunologist. I am just so upset and frankly scared for my little man. June wasn't the first time he was sick this year either. He has been sick off/on (more on than off) since last Decemeber. I am not going to go another 8 months before something is done about his immune system. The receptionist said she would talk to Dr M when he came in and give me a call back. Dr M stated to us that if J ever gets sick, to call *him* and well, we did, and look at what happened. I sure hope Dr M wants to see him or at least leaves a lab slip for some blood work for J. I didn't even think to ask about his allergy shots this week. He is supposed to get two, must be 24hrs apart and their office is closed on Fridays. Must make a note and stick it to the phone so I remeber to ask about it.

In our case some of these viruses have then turned into bacterial infections but until they did, antibiotics would do nothing and would actually harm the body. If his immune system is weak from dealing with his allergy load then yes, could pick up every stray virus that floats by. Other than helping his body cope with his allergies, allopathic (traditional MD) medicine can really do nothing for viruses and this kind of thing. I've found more help from naturopathic medicine. We use oscillococillum and Sambucol for the first signs of viruses because they are one of the few things to help head of viruses. I do understand your frustration. We've battled viruses for 2 months straight.
Mom2J112903
So we went to the allergist-and yep, he feels that the constant barage of allergies COMBINED with yet ANOTHER case of tonsilits has this child just stressed to the max. I don't understand how he was "fine" yesterday and barely escaped a hospital admission today. Yeah, I do, J is my child, this is what he does to us. Temp was up to 103 this afternoon. J received a steriod and antibiotic injection. Was sent home with a refferal to an ENT for tonsil removal. Also sent home with instructions to keep on Motrin for the next 48hrs. LOTS of fluids and rest as well. Have a script for Cefzil to be taken until the tonsils come out. If taking the tonsils out does not help this little man, he is going straight to B'ham for a full work up. Now to find a probiotic that will not break the bank but is stronger than 3 billion CFUs. If the child is going to be on antibiotics for approx 1 month, yeah, he needs something a little stronger than 3 billion CFUs.
