Just did a 180 with my history. MOH users come in!

I've decided to use MOH vol. 2 (Mystery of History). I ordered it today and we start school next Wed. AGHGHGHG.

So how do you all schedule this out weekly? I'll have a 3rd grader and a 6th grader. Do you add schedule any of the resources from the back or just use them as the kids show interest?

When I used MOH vol 2, I also used SOTW vol 2. MOH vol 2 is quite a bit of material. I looked ahead in both programs to see what read alouds or dvds were recommended that I wanted to incorporate. That way, I could order them or put them on hold at the library.

I did not schedule this program. We did history daily and we finished when we finished. It took about 3 semesters total with all the extras.

I had planned on using SOTW volume 2. I had it all planned out. Every week was scheduled with read-alouds, everything. Now I'm back to square one. I'm really thinking I'll just pick up MOH and go with it. We are still going to listen to SOTW on audio.

Just didn't know if anyone had a schedule that worked well for them.

Did you just read it?

Do the timeline?

The memory cards?

Written narrations?

Mapping?

I'm just curious how folks tackle it.

Wow! Maybe a schedule that lines up MOH and SOTW would help?

The add ins are the fly in the ointment.

MOH on its own has a nice weekly routine. There is a pre-test (not a test at all, just to pique interest), three weekly lessons, each with activities (on 3 different levels), and then the week wraps up with mapping, timeline prompts, 3x5 memory card prompts and a quiz.

How to fit in all the extra stuff is the hard part, and there I have no advice. :D

Did you just read it? basically

Do the timeline? I used Homeschool in the Woods timline

The memory cards? No

Written narrations? occasionally

Mapping? yes

I'm just curious how folks tackle it.

Again, I really did not schedule this that heavily. We read the lesson. We discussed the lesson. We looked at whatever timeline figures we needed. We did whatever mapwork was needed. I did plan read alouds and dvds. We did those at it came up. Some lessons were very "to the point" and only took a day. Others prompted much discussion, or art/craft/cooking projects, or other tangents that made it very interesting.

I am using MOH 1 with SOTW 1 Cd's with kids 7 and under.

MOH yahoo group is great for schedules , additional books lists, timelines , etc

We just read the lesson , do the narration (oral) , copywork the memory cards sentences ( which I printed from MOH yahoo group ) on a notebook paper . I use holdthatthought.com CD-Rom for maps and notebooking , it's great and matches MOH . Then we just put the timeline figure on the wall .

I check which books ( read aloud or readers ) go with the lesson and we stay on that subject as long as it takes . We like to look at Usborne World history Encyclopedia for pics and extra info and sometimes we watch related videos on youtube or http://www.neok12.com/

We also listen to both MOH Cd's and SOTW cd in the car for extra reinforcement .

We do about 2 lessons a week (sometimes 3) depending on the kids interest. We do 1-2 supplemental books with each lesson (as we can get them from our way to small library :glare:) We do *some* of the worksheets but we do ALOT of the activites. Now, that is how we did it last year with MOH 1. MOH 2 is much bigger so that is the plan. We will see how reality plays out :001_smile:

I also do MOH 2 with SOTW 2 (I have a 3rd grader and a 7th grader) Then we do the read alouds together (and my 7th grader has additional reading she does on her own)

Did you just read it? I read this aloud

Do the timeline? yes, the girls do (they make their own)

The memory cards? we didnt last year, are going to try this year

Written narrations? yes

Mapping? yes

I read the book aloud, my kids make a timeline, we didnt do the memory cards last year, but are considering it this year, my oldest does written narrations, my 3rd grader does oral (but I we might start written this year) we do the mapping. They LOVE the mapping.

You probably are aware of this, but just in case, you can see the table of contents online at rainbow resource if you want to plan it out now before your book arrives.

As for scheduling, we usually do it like this:

Mon: read lesson and do notebooking page

Tues: read lesson and do notebooking page

Wed: read lesson and do notebooking page

Thurs: add figures to timeline, complete pre-test (I don't care for the post-test concept, I use it as a review) and exercise or quiz

We don't do the memory cards or mapping, though we do look at maps and the globe when we do the notebooking page if it's a new location.

I add in books and activities if I find something really interesting. I try not to add in too many because I can get carried away easily and it bogs us down - history is not my kids' favorite subject.

I'm trying to do the same thing (SOTW with a younger and MOH with an older)-- can you tell what you mean by saying that you did them together? Did you have the 7th grader read SOTW or just have them do each book separately? And how did you schedule them since the two books don't line up? Just wondering because I'm tempted to go with Biblioplan but am wondering if I really need it. Thank you for your advice!
