Crimson Wife
My oldest and I got into an interesting discussion this afternoon related to the content of books. She asked me whether I was more concerned about violence or bad language. I responded that it really depended on the individual book. I told her that I was most worried about inappropriate "grown-up kissing stuff" (aka s*x). I then went on to note that puts me in the minority for this area as most parents seem way more concerned about violence than s*x. I also just finished reading the book Taking Back Childhood by Nancy Carlsson-Paige and again she places way more emphasis on the harms of violence in the media than the harms of age-inappropriate s*xual content. So I'm curious what the Hive sayeth. Which is your bigger concern when it comes to media content and your DC? Poll should show up shortly. :)
Carrie12345
For me, there are a million different factors - child's age, the theme of the book, the actual usage of sex/violence/language... Ds will probably be reading To Kill a Mockingbird this year. That has plenty of all of the above, but it's essential to the story. He's watched several war movies. Again, essential to the story. Gratuitous crud thrown in for shock value? No, thank you!
Daisy
I said other. I'm more concerned about moral relativism and religious pluralism.
Julie in CA
I'm not really worried about violence at all. Most people *never* become violent, and watching a tv show, movie, or reading a book that includes violence will not influence 99% of people to become Rambo. Sex on the other hand...most people do engage in it eventually, and I feel that kids are affected by seeing it presented, promoted (and perverted) by American culture (or lack thereof :glare:). Violence is just plain ugly most of the time, but sex is something beautiful that is *made* ugly in it's portrayal, kwim?
