*********
So my mom and dad live in the house that my dad grew up in. Dad bought the house from his dad. Unfortunately, the economy being what it is here in Michigan, they're going to lose the house. A few weeks ago, DTE came out to 'trim' some branches that were too close to the lines. Well, my mom says they really hacked the huge maple tree to almost nothing. My dad planted that tree when he was a little boy; he was devastated. I got my mom to salvage a branch and bring it to me. I was hoping to get either a keepsake box or a picture frame made for my dad. That way, he'll at least have a keepsake from his favorite tree when he has to leave the house. But, I have no idea how to find someone to turn this hunk of wood into something! It's a 4in. dia x 24in long log, and it's maple. How do I find someone to do this? We're in Southeast Michigan; but I'd be willing to ship the wood to someone if I needed to. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
fhjmom
What a thoughtful gift! I don't have any suggestions for Michigan, but here a historic tree was damaged by high winds. The city commissioned pieces to be made and have been sold as a fund raiser. Here is a link to the information about it: http://www.grapevinetexas.gov/IndividualDepartments/ParksandRecreation/BicentennialTreeArtforSale.aspx I bought a wooden pen set for my dad (I couldn't afford anything bigger). They link says that the "Woodturners of North Texas" is the group that created the pieces. Maybe Google "woodturners" for your area or contact the North Texas group to see if they know of a group closer to you or how to find one. Or if they are willing to ship the pieces back and forth? Good luck! I would love to see finished pieces. I know some of the ones here were absolutely beautiful!!

MorganClassicalPrep
Unfortunately, the economy being what it is here in Michigan, they're going to lose the house. No advice just :grouphug:. My parents are also losing the house that my dad grew up in. My grandparents actually built the house. It's very sad.
littlebug42
My dh might be able to help you. He made several crosses and some other things out of a cherry tree that fell on my Mom's house a few years ago. He is very busy for the next two weeks but after that it is pretty clear. We are located in SW Ohio so not too far off the mark if you are interested. PM me if you want more details.
