I have tried to help my son find something but all we can find are articles and books on early civilizations and not on why writing, government, law, etc. are important to a civilization. Melissa B Posted August 9, 2010 Share Posted August 9, 2010 The first book of Will Durant's Story of Civilization, Our Oriental Heritage, begins with a long essay on the beginnings of civilization (maybe 40 pages or so.) I'm working from memory, but I think it breaks down the necessary components of civilization into about seven categories and talks about the whys of each catagory.
