plain jane
I bought Sentence Composing and Story Grammar for Elementary School to use along with MCT Island level. I'm looking through the books and really like them, but they're not the least expensive books I've encountered. :tongue_smilie: I'm wondering if anybody has had success doing them orally or if there is a great benefit to having the student write out the sentences like the text suggests? Also, I could use some help with scheduling it all. I was planning to do MCT as recommended in the .pdf on the site and add in one short lesson from Sentence Composing... then move on the Story Grammar... after the first book has been completed. Will this work or is there a more efficient way of scheduling everything?

plain jane
I don't use Killgallon's books, but do use the techniques (you can find them here: http://userpages.umbc.edu/~killgall/) along with MCT. What I do is use MCT as my core program. Then after the kids have analyzed the practice sentence, MCT style, they chunk and imitate Killgallon style. Oh, you're goooooood. :thumbup1: Great idea!! Why didn't I think of that? :001_huh::tongue_smilie::lol:
Crimson Wife
I I'm wondering if anybody has had success doing them orally or if there is a great benefit to having the student write out the sentences like the text suggests? I'm using them with an advanced younger student so I allow her to dictate while I transcribe. I wrote in the book, but you could easily do it on notebook paper. I alternate between MCT and Killgallon so I don't have any advice on using them simultaneously, sorry!
Mom-ninja.
You guys are killing me! I'm using WWE and FLL right now. I plan to use MCT when we're done with FLL. I like WWE and hope to be able to use it as the new levels are released along with using MCT. How would this compare to WWE? I can't possibly fit in MCT, WWE, and Killgallon could I? My boys would hate me. ;)
Crimson Wife
How would this compare to WWE? My DD used WWE1 in 1st & I've previewed levels 2 & 3. The Killgallon books take a completely different approach to writing. WWE uses the traditional methods of copywork, dictation, and narration. Killgallon has the student write creative sentences imitating the syntax of the model. They work on different skills and I feel both have merit. I think a student would benefit from doing MCT, WWE, and Killgallon- but it would probably be overkill to do all 3 simultaneously.
Mom-ninja.
So the question would be how to use all the programs. OP is asking how to use MCT and Killgallon. I'll be watching for ideas so maybe I can figure out how to get WWE in the mix as well.

My plan is to do 20 min of MCT each day, one page of Killgallon, and the daily WWE lesson. I don't think it'll be that much... 45min TOPS of grammar and writing. Sounds good to me.

The kids'll never notice. :001_huh::lol: Just rip all the books up and file them and they won't know how many programs you've patched together. :D:lol: (I'm kidding, I think. I'm not a filer :))

It does sound like a good way to sneak things in. :tongue_smilie:That filing talk is tempting, but I'm such an open-and-do-the-next-thing person I think it's hopeless to try and change.
