Tap
Ds wants an airbrush/compressor to paint models (Warhammer 40K) and homemade terrain. What do I look for? I am hoping to spend under $150?
hornblower
I just bought an airbrush for ds! We were at the hobby store yesterday! He went for the basic intro model, which uses the propellant can rather than an air compressor. However, it has an adaptor so it can also be used with a compressor. http://www.testors.com/product/136949/8821A/_/Broad_Stroke_EZ_Airbrush_Set_with_Propellant The propellant cans freeze up after about 1.5 mins of continous use but you can put them in a basin of warm (not hot!) water to keep them running a bit longer. But if you're doing modelling, you rarely have it on for a huge long time at a go anyway. We were told that for doing model planes (which ds is doing) each can is good for about 2-3 mid size models. I think the cans cost $6. The kit has the little glass bottles so you can quick change your paints & you can buy extra little jars for the kit. Ds got a quick lesson from the store owner & lots of tips. Ds has never airbrushed before & he's my 'flighty' kid - into one thing 10000% percent for a month & then sometimes he is over it forever, so I didn't want to spend a huge amt of money on something he might not pursue for a long time. He does like modeling though & has built a # with dh so maybe he'll stick with this. The good paints are expensive - we spent more on paints for his airplane model than on the kit. The owner advised ds to use dust mask & safety glasses with the paints ds is using (& have an open window). With some other paints, he said he wouldn't want kids using them without full respirators. There are newer acrylic paints which are much less toxic coming on the market now - it's what hobbyists in Europe use apparently... BTW, you know you've been in a hobby store too often when the store owner knows our 'customer ID #' off by heart & enters it into the checkout computer without asking for the name or ph # :D
