Sonlight "style" science?

I think I'm looking for a science that is set up as Sonlight is - basically a bunch of read-aloud books with a schedule. Sonlight science is a bit too pricey. What are the literature based science programs out there for grammar age?

If you really don't want any hands on, I don't know that it can be easier than the WTM Life Science you have listed.

Do you have a pretty good library?

I also think that at 5yo picking books completely by intrest for science would be great too. Go to the 500's and pick what you like.

Many science books also have simple "try this" activites in them. If you find one that looks fun, give it a try.

If you go with the Sonlight books (whether or not you buy them there) minus the DVD and IG it would be cheaper ... I appreciate having the IG but it is pretty easy at this age to just read the books as interested. All the experiments for K and 1 have been in the Usborne Science activity books, so the DVD is unnecessary, IMO ...

Noeo is similar...not much cheaper though. Experiment kits are spendy, but it's worth it to me to have everything on hand and scheduled.

Here are a few differences:

1. The IG is purely a reading schedule. It does include assignments for each day, but not the extensive notes and worksheets that I've heard about with SL. However, I'm really enjoying how Noeo is set up and the books really speak for themselves so far (we're only in Chem I). This is what makes it a bit cheaper too.

2. More secular. The family is Christian and choose to leave evolution/ creation out of the curriculum. Sonlight includes books on the topic and includes copious notes in the IG from what I've heard. I'm adding some of those SL books to the Noeo schedule where appropriate.

3. Noeo focuses on a single branch of science each year while SL mixes it up. This is the main reason I went with Noeo. I just thought it would fit my ds's personality better with the idea that if he gets bored, we'll switch to SL. Noeo's not boring so far...we love it!

Since my ds is such a science nut, we are adding in some extra SL science books (besides the ones mentioned above) using then library when I can. My ds is also reading through the Christian Liberty Nature Readers as his free reading. We just can't get enough science around here. :)

I have had great luck finding the SL science books on the for sale board for a fraction of the cost. Then I buy the IG new and extra activity sheets (since I have 2 using the same level). You could also buy a used IG of the last 2 years and SL will still have the activity sheets in stock for those years. I did that this year - I had a 2009 IG for Science 2 but had neglected to buy the extra set of activity sheets at the time. I was able to buy 2009 activity sheets. You just have to note what you want in the comment box.

I think the Discover & Do DVDs are my sons' favorite part of the program!

Christian Kids explore biology might work for what you want. It is scheduled and lists activities. It includes literature books for going further into the study. It is a classical approach and not expensive. The actual layout is not like SL, though. I think it is a Cathy Duffy's top pick.

That's one of the programs I've been looking at, unfortunately none of my friends have it for me to look at. (Which is quite rare!) I'm keeping it on my radar, though.
